over heating ea82

Post by AzzA » Thu Jun 26, 2008 11:35 pm

hey all i have a problem which i cant seem to find in my l series.about a year ago(it was my dads at the time)the car overheated on my dad on his way to work.so we replaced the radiator on mechanics advice and it lived for a few more weeks untill it did it again and again.after this dad got pissed and got a new car and left it to me.ive been using it as a baddock basher(untill a tree got in my way lol)and it would occasionly get pretty hot.i am in the process of fixing it up 2 drive again and would like to know of wat the overheating problem could be if it is not the radiator

Might sound silly but did you check the thermostat and it's housing? Only time mine has overheated was when the thermostat housing cracked, and while 4wheeling on the beach after a very dodgy oil change, which resulted in cracked/damaged heads. After motor pull down, found gaps (!) between cylinders wide enough to lay a pencil in.

Cause was obviously stupidity on my part for the cracks, as for the thermostat housing simply old age and wear. Have you checked timing, spark leads, pcv thingo and all the other noisy bits under the hood? If the radiator was replaced with new, did you flush the block and hoses? I cannot give you any easy answer, perhaps some of the more experienced members know of another quirk subaru snuck into the L series? Otherwise try the forum archives, they are chokkas full of info for ea82's, and all things subi.

cheers mate!

lets not forget the problem of over heating an EA82 with the result of warped heads/blown head gasket... -> check your oil for creamyness - if its a creamy colour after a run you've done a headgasket as this is the water and oil mixed together.

The water pump is pretty common problem, if it hasn't been replaced in a while I'd get onto that first.

Good luck with it. I hope the tree didn't cause too much damage.

the water pump will look like its been eather leaking or you,ll have play in the bearing...grab the pulley and giggle it...if it feels like its got play or it clunks then its on its way out...if it looks like its been leaking then its had its day.....the thermostat is were the top hose meets the motor..there is a neck the hose joins to that is held on by 2 bolts..undo the bolts/take the neck off and you,ll set the therstat inside that if its got one there..if you dont have one there just go buy one and put it in....over heating can also be coused by not haveing a therstat to controll water flow as the heat cant get out of the water as it moving to fast
