does anyone know the exact power to weight ratio of a 2001 MY01 WRX?

Post by slick_rider » Mon Jul 07, 2008 9:47 pm

hey guys im a noob on this web site, ive been reading a little on the forums, and it just so happened that my old crap camry got stolen and who ever stole it thrashed the gear box so bad it gonna cost more to fix it then to actually sell it when it was working. Now i can finally get serious looking at getting a wrx, but because i still got 3 months left on my p's i, the power to weight has to be 125 kw per tonne.

Ive looked around on vic roads which is useless, and on the net, but i cant seem to find the exact number. if anyone could let me know thanks, ive been dying to get a wrx, and i hope i do :D

cheers

Hey Slickrider, welcome to the forums - where are you? Northern suburbs could be anywhere, I'm guessing in Vic since you mentioned vicroads...

In answer to your quiery I'd drop into a subaru dealership to see if they have any power figures from brochures, I'd find it hard to believe that they can't get any.

If you can go the 3 months riding on public transport/"stealling" mum's car etc you won't have to worry about power to weight ratio. I'm sure the cops won't hammer you down anyway - there are so many high performance cars with P plate drivers in benders and the cops aren't doing much about it til that power is abused. Benders cops can be harsh on your car if they don't like the look of it...

Good luck on your dreams. Make sure you get a good one that hasn't been modified or thrashed - check it out when the motor is cold, walk away at the sound of any knocking from the engine. This means it has been thrashed. Other than that the usual checks apply.

Cheers

If you want the exact power to weight, we will need to know what year model you will be getting, but its gonna be more than 125kw/t

The first gen WRX had close to 155Kw and weighted about 1200Kg

That gives about 129Kw/t

get a dyno sheet for atw power and then u will come under the power to wheight ratio... i can actually argue this with my xr8 ute at the fly wheel my gf cant drive it but at the wheels she can.... apart from v8's being banned

there are also exemptions to that rule if it is a problem... but as long as u dont drive it like a dick and it doesnt stand out and the car is 100% road worthy they will leave u alone... or get it registered in your mums name... problem solved :D

hey guys me and my mate just did sum maths, dug around and stuff, and we found on red book ( hoping its a realiable source) that the power to weight works out to be 118 kw :) YES! so legally i can drive it around if i get one.

thats the next point i should get too. Ive been looking around at sum nice 2000, 01, 02 wrx 5 speed manual, and the average price is around 17k to 21k. this again sounds like a noob question, but *rumor* has it that the gear box can be a bit of a problem on a thrashed wrx, and is it a problem i should really look out for? how do i avoid it? and on the stats on those cars i have been lookin at they say that fuel consumption is like 11 lt per 100 km. i know if that u push of ur obviously its gonna drink more. but is that around right?

is there anything else to really look at in specifics when purchasing a wrx?

note : im a subaru noob, none of my friends have then, they have skylines, new golfs, 180sx, 200sx, but none of them have a wrx :( i feel like im in the dark.

The gearbox is fine if you drive it like a road car. Its when you start reving the engine then dumping the clutch trying to make all 4 wheels spin that things in the gearbox start to give way.

As much as people call subaru gearboxes "glassboxes", they're a really well built box for their intended purpose. If you push the gearbox beyond its limits, just like the rest of the car it'll let go and that's when you have problems.

Drivers these days need to realise its not how fast you travel/take off/stop etc, its how safely and on the ball you do it. Classy drivers are highly regarded in my book - that means someone in a neat car, be it high performance or not, driving it sweet in a classy way ;)

Good luck on your search, an unmodified WRX will always be better value against a modified one - remember this when you think you need a bigger turbo/intercooler etc.

Cheers

hey guys ive done a bit of searching around for a car, and i have found one that has really caught my eye. It turns out that my sisters, boyfriends brother, next door neighbour is selling a wrx.

the specs are that it is a 2000 impreza, N MY00 wrx special edition sedan, 4 door, 5 seats and is manual. its done 95,000 km, only 1 owner of the car, dark blue, with the only mod to the car a muffler, and nearly forgot to say that it has a leather interior. female driver that has only used it for work purposes. had a major service 5 months ago. they are asking for around 17k to 18k.

Im going for an inspection on saturday, but i got to be honest, im REALLY excited, i havent been this happy about the prospect of getting a wrx. what do u guys think? what should i look for? yay or nay?
