Since I have spammed every other subaru forum with H6 goodness I thought Ausubaru should cop it too. :)

Just finished another EZ30 conversion, this time and EZ30R with aftermarket ECU.

The engine is a test unit from an 05 Legacy, it'd been in stock for quite a while as there were no ecus that could run them until recently.

I replaced the E-throttle with a ford unit from a common local car. It has a simple 2 wire IAC valve and TPS and best of all, it bolted straight on to the EZ manifold. Had to make an anchor bracket for it and budget wouldn't allow the cruise control to be re-used unfortunately.

I purchased a chinese GDB alloy radiator and modified it to suit the EZ top tanks. They are very cheap and the quality is equal to any local product at twice the price.

The engine went in on std mounts and was mated to a 2000 EJ25 gearbox with a HD exedy clutch. Fitment is pretty straightforward.

The returnless fuel rails were modified for returns. This was as simple as cutting the cap off the end of the rail and tapping it for 1/4 BSP thread. A barbed fitting then screws in and a parallel rail setup with an adjustable reg was used. Easy.

....next up was some headers.

Started with a box of mandrel bends, collectors and flange plates, and ended up with these.

I couldn't get a straight answer on primary lengths because of the variable lift and timing on the cams so I ended up googling up a header calculator and compromising between what it should be and what fitted the car.



Next up was the ecu. I chose a Vipec V88(rebadged Link G4 extreem) as it was proven to run the EZ30R AVCS engine(thanks AnotherwhiteGTB).

It took a full day to do the initial wire up that would allow us to start the engine.

Powered up the ecu that afternoon and configured it with some help from the dealer(30 minutes work) and it fired up second try with nothing more than a change of the master fuel figure. Very happy.



I then spent a couple more days conduiting and securing the wiring and sorting out things like aircon and fan control. Also did some simple mapping to get the car drivable, it drives very well for the little amount of effort. The idle control strategy works as well as factory.



For cooling we used a pair of slimline thermo fans blowing through the condensor and radiator.

Added a stainless steel intake with an in guard mounted filter and it's ready for the dyno.

All this work took 6 days start to finish. Very happy with the Vipec and highly recommend it for this engine(or the Link, whichever is supported in your area). It's as simple as dropping down a box and selecting [EZ30R AVCS] from the trigger menu.

Dyno is monday, couldn't get it in for friday. It's running around on a simple fuel and ignition map atm in the hands of the owner.
The Vipec was ludicrously easy to setup and get running well. I was amazed.

The car was tuned on monday and made 122kw atw with power flattening out after 5k rpm.
Surprise surprise, the exhaust was restricting it(2" ID rear muffler).

So the owner came back up to Noosa the next day and I arranged to get a 2.5" system fitted from the headers back. Sounds good now, back to the dyno that afternoon.
I had a drive pre exhaust change on the 122kw tune. Vtec(yo) kicked in quite aggressively at 4500rpm and it did go very well in the top end with bulk usable torque down low.

So back to the dyno and the exhaust freed up another 18kw atw up to 140.

I haven't seen the latest sheet yet, will post up when I see it. The first chart showed a jump from 70 to 110kw atw at the point vtec kicked in(yo).

I'd be interested to see the torque curve.

Is the Vtec you are using a piggy back? From your first post I took it as though it was stand alone.

The variable lift is controlled by one of the auxillary outs on the ecu. It's just a simple changeover solenoid.
I suggested the changeover be moved down in the rpm range because the first dyno sheet shows the power actually dropping before the changeover(and you could feel it on the road). It was moved down to 4k rpm but I have not seen the car since so don't know whether it has smoothed out the power curve.

It's back in Sydney now.

I see. What is the VTec like price wise? How would that system work with an auto?

The ecu is a Vipec V88 wire in. There is no factory ecu at all. The Vipec controls everything, AVCS, variable lift, the lot. It is the top model ecu and is basically a rebadged Link G4 extreem but with Australian support. They are $2500 retail.

It would work with an Auto but the auto ecu would have codes set and the power light would flash on a G3 onwards.
