Are these GEM engines? If so they're exchange, ie they need an old one back.
Not worth the trouble, even with the discount. I work for a reputable auto parts business in WA and I'll tell you now - no point in fluffing around getting stuff like this through work when you can just go get the entire front half of a car off your local importer. Much much easier.

As far as big power upgrades go on Brumbys, the best option is a conversion. The word implies changing the vehicle to suit something else, so realistically if you want a Brumby that goes hard you're going to have to change a lot of things.

I've really only been in the Subaru scene for a short time myself, nearly 5 years, and in that time I've done nearly everything conceivable to the MY series. I'm about to EJ16 convert my lovely stock-as-a-rock Leone sedan, my first NA EJ conversion and I'll be letting the board know all about it. I'm swapping out the now dead EA81 motor for an MPFI EJ16. Basically I'm losing 200cc in the process but there will be gains, multipoint injection, 16 valves and 1000 more revs. Best of all it should bring better economy.

Long story short if you want to step up from the EA81 there is a lot of work involved. If you want the EA to go a bit harder it's quite simple but if you want to go to the next level expect a lot of headaches.

this is just the engine though isnt it? still, i then have to ship it up here and that so i think it will be easier to go down to jap motors and pick up a front cut.

how hard is it to fit an ej22t into a brumby or would an ej20t be better and possibly get it ported?

I havn't heard of an EJ22t before, unless somebody has custom fitted a turbo to an EJ22.
That would be a pretty cool motor to have in a brumby, but I think custom fitting a turbo to an EJ22 might be harder than just getting the chassis cut and welded to fit a stock EJ20turbo motor in.

EJ20turbo would definitely be a better motor in the end because it's designed for a turbo in the first place. You probably wouldn't see the need for porting it for a long long time - EJ20turbo Brumby is a pretty wild prospect already!

haha my bad i was just assuming there was such a thing LOL, i think there is an EJ20tt that came out in some of the liberty's, might find out which was a more powerful motor and go from there...

From what I've heard of the TT motors stay away for a conversion. One look under the bonnet of one will convince you.

I think the first thing you need to do is learn your car. Get a brumby, work the original ea81 engine, it'll never be a powerhouse but you'll get some decent power out of a well worked engine, convert it to 5spd ( constant or part time 4wd l series box), do your stereo gear and make it look good.

Once you've done all that ( as much by yourself as possible ) you'll have a much better appreciation of your car and how it runs, and more importantly you'll be building up your confidence for the big job of an EJ conversion. Hell you may even find that you're happy with the engine it comes with. There's a lot to be said for the mighty ea81.

Let's get one thing straight here, right from the start: There is no such engine as an EJ20t or TT or whatever you wanna call them. They are all EJ20s. There are EJ20Gs, but that's not an EJ20t. It's an EJ20 Turbo.

EJ22 Turbos were not released on the Australian market but they do exist. However as they have the same heads as an EJ20 Turbo they don't fit into a Brumby.

Me thinks me needs to put up the WRX Brumby FAQ sticky again.

assuming you are talking about the USDM EJ22 Turbos that came in the US Legacy Turbo.....they used a single cam head.....they might well fit into a brat.

The only other EJ22 Turbo that i know of was the 22b Motor, which definately did use the Twin Cam Heads.

I would like to ask a really dumb question...

I know there is a lot of people on this board with EA81's , some of which I believe hammer the crap out of some later model engines, 140 hp or something, out of their ea81's.

What has to be done to those to get them to really fly?

I know the aircraft guys get some grunt out of them - was just thinking of some economical, non too difficult tasks for the young fella ( he's only 16 or something - arn't you ?)

That way you have a car which goes pretty good + you will have some bux left over for panel paint interior and bling..

'88 Vortex AWD turbo with "go hard" attitude -

WRX EJ20G and box , TD05 Turbo and 4.111 running gear.
5 Stud conversion (Crossbred Performance) Multi pot GT Legacy brakes and 17" rims
Plenty of plans... the plans are getting done slowly;).... getting there - NOT! ;)

I'm pretty sure it's stinky's brumby with the EA81T that holds the 140hp crown, if you can find a reasonable EA81T for a reasonable price go for it, but they're not easy to come by.

This pretty well covers the easy/affordable options, assuming you've got a healthy engine to start with this could get you from the stock 55kw upto maybe 80kw if your really lucky.
http://www.ausubaru.com/main/modules.ph ... opic&t=414

Beyond that you're looking at head work/custom heads, custom intake, balancing, etc.

I've heard of EA81's that rev to almost 10,000rpm (possibly just BS) but Brett's pig is a good example of an angry EA81.

If you want an easy bolt in option and money is not an issue you could get a RAM Engine they put out upto 140hp but also cost upto US$9,000 then you have to get it to Australia.

So all things considered IMO follow the link and do the upgrades in there, once you're done there you should be pretty familiar with your car and developed a bit of mechanical knack (as well as the modding bug ) if it still doesn't go fast enough grab yourself any SOHC EJ, an AWD box and work from there, expect your car to be off the road for a while, expect to do some creative thinking to overcome some hurdles, but at the end of the day it will be an achievement you'll be proud of.

While I've not heard of a 140hp N/A EA81, I'm sure you could do it with the right fuel. 120 or so is just at your fingertips however.

Tuning an EA81 is just like tuning an old Holden or a Chev. Less friction, more compression, lots of spark and a big ole' lumpy cam with a carby (or carbies) to suit.

Who remembers BYB-01's old red Pig? Brett what's the list of mods on that old thing?

Nah I get 120HP on the ea81t brumby, plenty more can be done to it though, it's not *that* far from stock.

Once I finish my tourer I'll be on the hunt for as much power as easily and cheaply as possible from the EA81 for my bush beastie (aka white wagon), I'm pretty keen for the modified throttle body injection on a standard and/or custom manifold, tuned headers, forward facing snorkle intake, all sorts of crazy ideas.

I plan to do most if not all work myself, so I'll let you all know how it works out and do my best to put up plenty of how to's for those that follow in my lunacy , chances are I won't make much progress before stockton in easter though.

Oh yeah, can't forget the most essential mods of all an AUSubaru sticker for the front and a BackYardBoys sticker for the rear 8)

There was a bit done to it. Long story short is 40thou over bore, ACL duralites, chrome rings, 60 thou taken off the heads for more compression, some porting, 30/70 Ivan tighe cam, ACL race bearings (now called some thing else) for mains and big ends, 40DCNF weber with modded adapter, 6kg fly wheel, 2" headers, 2.5 system.

It was pretty quick for an EA81. Not as quick as my mates EA82T ute at the time but not far off it. The motor was extremely responsive and revved it's nut off for what it was.

I thought there was a video of it around here some where. I can't find it, so I have uploaded it again.

well i've made the decision, im gonna get a dodgy brumby, not gonna worry about mileage or anything and pick up a cheap one probly and get a wrx half cut and rear diff (you's say i need a SOHC engine, yes?) and do the transmission conversion with a mate and maybe put the engine in with him too and connect all the hoses up and get an auto leccy to do the wiring ( i know one so i might get it done cheaper). anything else that has to be done, like major stuff...

cheers,

brad

IMO you'd be better off with a liberty half/front cut, the wrx's have dohc engines, your average lib has a sohc EJ22.

Turbo Libertys (RS's) have the same motor as a WRX (EJ20 turbo). These aren't SOHC engines and consequently won't fit in a Brumby unless you cut and weld the chassis rails.

The early Liberty motors are the same as the early WRX ones basically. The only real difference is the intercooler.
