Got bored, so i made a new intake
First week of my holidays and its been raining since monday. Not happy, i had heaps planned.
Anyway, i got bored and got thinking about the tiny size of the intake on my Outback, so i went to the hardware and bought two 90, one 45 and one 22 degree 90mm stormwater bends.
I got a 90mm holesaw and cut a bigger hole in my airbox, and then used the bends to connect it to the over radiator intake funnel.
It isnt finished yet, im gonna drive it for a week and see how it goes, it needs a support bracket and its kinda noisy at low revs (sounds awesome above 4000rpm) so im thinking of grafting the resonator back on.

I don't suppose there is a larger airbox and panel filter in the Subaru range that fits in the original space is there ?
The thing is that all ya have in an atmo charged engine is atmospheric pressure to feed it so the lowest restriction system is the one that gets all the available pressure to charge the cylinders .
Of course cool air is dense air so cool is er cool ...
Sometimes people chase cool air from the inner side of the inner guard but maybe not the best in an off roader - particularly if you take it swimming .
Really having warm air is of little consequence at low speeds and loads , its higher loads where the throttle is open wider at low revs that hot air detonation can be a problem .
That thing should have reasonably sophisticated knock control so you wouldn't hear it ping but retarded timing takes the wind out of the sails a bit .
Maybe if really keen you could get one of the better AWD dyno mobs to retune its computer and reflash its memory - if it has flash memory that is . I've no idea how soft Subaru has those engine management systems .
Another option on some of those EJ's is to turn the plenum section around so that the induction faces forwards - less roar . Dunno what you do for ducting on an NA one though .
Always options to play with .
PS Don't ya hate this time of year when nothings open and skilled friends go postal .

yeah it'll give you better power output... but be careful when you drive in water in nose, once water gets in your engine... zzziiiipppp... goodbye!

Yep, and then you get stuck into the engine with a 9" grinder, eh Gannon? If you're interested in doing a stage 2, I'd aim to bend or replace that intake funnel to give the air a straighter path straight back towards the airbox entry. Looks good now though.

The little bit on the end of the funnel is a woeful restriction. Thats why i cut it off and heated the funnel up and jammed the piece of 90mm pipe up there. Its much larger now.
Im gonna use one of these halfway, as a place for any water to fall into, and i'll drill a little hole in the bottom. It may also quieten it down a bit

You would have to be doing very well to get water into the intake funnel on the outback, i rekon the front of the bonnet would have to be under water before water was sucked up over the top of the radiator. And even if it did, there are numerous channels and holes in the funnel to let the water out.

It happens quite easy actually, a few members of the Suby club have been caught out by this allready.You would have to be doing very well to get water into the intake funnel on the outback, i rekon the front of the bonnet would have to be under water before water was sucked up over the top of the radiator.

in the race car for hill climbs and such im planning on running a hoop of ice with the intake pipe going through for the ea82 this might cool the air ever so slightly and thus give me an increase cheap power all .000000000005 kw of it

there isnt a lot of ways you can cool air down before putting it into the engine.
turbos can run a intercooler but thats about it. unless you have massive compression, in theory you can run an intercooler or somthing then to suck hair through it but yeah theories need to be ttested
