Heres my Subie. WWYD?

Post by 86subieXT » Mon Nov 14, 2011 2:01 am

I watched that old 80's Subaru XT add last night.

i wanted to be sure i had a super legit Subaru so i gave it a go myself.

Didnt go over so well.
thought long and hard and decided to make it super legit.
I think i need to ditch the factory air ride suspension for some beefier struts and springs. and defiantly get rid of those 13" donuts.

No one in my area lifts their subarus and none have even seen a XT

Came here to see what advice and insight you guys can give me. :D

has the been attempted on a XT????

Nice parking :) and well done.

The XT aka Vortex shares the same floor pan as the "L" series so a lift kit for an "L" will go straight in.

Sending a kit from Australia would cost a fortune, it could be an idea to get in touch with T'subaru and see where he got his lift kit from.

As for wheels Im sure there would be a billion more rims available from the wreckers there, or In the country below you.

Perfect :) thats what i wanted to hear. keeping it nice and simple.

Now if one wanted something a little more heavy duty. as far as shocks and struts go, what could i pull them off of?
Newer legacy?

Im not sure what motor you have 4 or 6 or if your XT is 2wd, AWD or part time 4WD.

Im sure you cant use the later legacy suspension with out modification.

Replacement struts and springs are available for the XT, or the vortex as it is called in Australia.

Hi and Welcome 86subieXT,

Nice XT4 Turbo you have there.. and I guess you didn't take heed to the words at the bottom of that vid. hahaha well worth the fun anyway.. and 10 points for trying

Most parts will be available to you either in your homeland or from the yanks.. but I'd try looking on Ebay for parts and try using searches for DL and GL from 1986 to 1990. Also it's a good idea to post here if you're unsure.. may save you some dollars and headaches ;)

I picked the car up for 900$ canadian.
has 110,000kms 5 speed. 4cly turbo. with 4WD at the push of a button.
it has the air ride and self leveling suspension but its blown so it rides like a boat.

done minor mods.
3" turbo back exhaust.
Snow Performance methanol injection
HKS fuel cut defender.

Winter is coming here so i want to get it in the air.
there are absolutely no Subarus on the road older that 1992.
Im the only XT/Vortex i know of on the road in my province.

its cool but it means i can get parts if i tried.
there is however some older loyales in some wrecking yards.

I may pull the struts out of those and make some spacer plates as a lift kit.
sounds good on paper

helps keep the IAT down. boost the octane aswell which helps because im running 13psi.
overall it a bigger difference. i think the exhaust was the best so far.

Don't forget to offset the bolts on the lift kit for the struts, for every 25mm you add you need 6-7mm offset on the kit.

this is a picture of most of a kit for an L series

I'd like to see the fuel economy differences on long trips.. and how does it go with rusting out your exhaust? I guess a stainless steel exhaust would be a must.

The water evaporates instantly, the exhaust exceeds
100 degrees celcius so it can not cling to the walls and the
only way out as steam is the tailpipe :)

water condensates in exhaust anyway.

Ok.. just thought it would speed up the exhaust rusting process.

When does it start to spray? just off idle, cruise or all the time?

Not sure if you have seen this but it is worth downloading just to see what another member has done to his vortex (did?)
