What brand of gear oil

Post by Bobbrumby » Tue Jan 31, 2006 4:40 pm

I did a post on redline gear oil for my ea81 dr 4spd but there were no replies so i supose noone uses it.

What kind of gear oil do you guys run in your ea gearboxes?

I changed it last time with valvolone 80/90 and with advice from the subaru shop reused the alloy seal, it now it leaking a fair bit so i was gunna change it out again and use some rtv silcon with only the plug to make the seal. Should that seal it up alright? Is valvoline any good?

Btw: cold shifts heaps better but still to notchy for my liking (no grinding yet, cept it you yank it back into second really quick with highish revs in third (havenot done since the first week i owned the car))

Castrol Multitrax. It is made for hypoid front diffs combined with gearbox. Keep the alloy seal, it stops the plug from stripping the thread. Just true up the faces with a fine cut file or oil stone.
If it can't be cut, welded or re-machined, you probably don't need it.

I used Fuchs, made the gearbox shift better. And it only seems to be getting better (very slowly) Or maybe thats me being nicer on the box.

Fuchs is a pretty high end oil, from what I've heard it's good stuff and if you have the spare cash it's worth it.

i duno if this box is worth high end oil as it has input bearing noise, leaks from about every seal on it and makes a tapping noise at arround 3500 and above, i have changed tranny mounts. Its got 280k km on it now so I am thinking a pulling another box for it. Like at what mileage do the 4speeds sinchro's start to get clunky? Or is it the prolonged use of the sloppy shifter that wrecks em?

Hell if anyone has got a 1 piece ea81 5speed driveshaft lieing arround and willing to sell, i might put a l series box in it.

Oh and does repco sell fuch's?

I'll second that, been good for me, but had to run the lighter grade than the recommended to improve shifts.

I didn't relise it was "high end" I think I paid around $55 - $65 bucks for 4 litres of RX80. Its very interesting how it gets better over time. I think I might be imagining things.. 8O

While I have never seen Redline used in EA boxes before It is commonly used in EJ gear (including my two cars) with very good results. Just make sure you use the Redline Shockproof Lightweight stuff (in the blue container) for your road car, the red (heavy) stuff is more designed for race cars.

just found out my bro only paid $40 for the 4 litres of fuchs RX80. I'm a bit ify on castrol. After the mess the GTX2 made in my bros telstar's rocker. I normally just use valvoine, cos its cheap. But these old gearboxes are picky

Could try Caltex RPM Borate EP68. Just put some into a 5 speed which has a crunchy 2 & 3rd gear shift (synchros) and it is improving daily. Only drawback is $130 for 20L (smallest drum available). The experts at the Caltex tech centre, who (unusually) seem to know their stuff, reckon it has cured many a problem in transaxles in the past. It is GL5, so I don't know if there is an issue with the rings. Does anyone know if the 80's boxes have brass synchros?

Small country town mate. Things also cost more in SA. I'm hoping some of this RX80 is going to make my dads 5sp better, its worse then what mine was like before the oil change though. It may of been $40 for 5L, not sure. but I'd guess if you got 5L I would of got the same.
