G'day All,
I have started noticing a new noise comming from the brumby. Worse when cold, and almost disappears when warm. Sort of like the sound of a blowfly stuck between the sheets of glass on an open house window if you can picture what I mean.
It is intermittent at about 40 seconds / minute. I have felt the dizzy cap and it feels like it is comming up through the dizzy. I am thinking some sort of sleeve bearing on it's way out.
Is there any sort of replaceable bearing insert in these dizzy's ? (electronic dizzy if it makes any difference ) or is it time for a trip to the wreckers ?
Worn EA81 Distributor bearing ?
Bush got a lot worse very quickly, fancy that
Took the dizzy to a local auto electrician, they replaced the lower bush which didn't need replacing and told me they couldnt get the upper bush. Had a hunt around for a replacement dizzy, way to expensive for something that is only going to run another 3 to 6 months.
I ended up machining one from a piece of LG2 Bronze solid I had laying around. Fits better than the bought one
and all is mostly good now.
I got the dizzy back from the sparky in pieces, I reckon I have got all the thrust washers back in the right order ? No funny noises yet so I must be close.
Anyway, the plate that is connected to the vacume diaphragm _should_ be able to rotate in response to vacume changes ? Mine becomes fixed in one position once I fit all the screws, making the diaphragm redundant. Is this right, it seems wrong to me ? The Brumby pulls like it did before I pulled the Dizzy so it may have been like that all along, but whether it is right ??
The DIzy is a Hitachi 2 wire electronic if that makes any difference

the vac advance...
The vac advance diaphragm usually flogs out on older EA81's. It is just there to smooth out the timing by advancing it slightly as you accelerate. The car will still run fine but won't be achieving *optimum* performance with a broken diaphragm.
You can always check by sucking on the hose yourself and seeing if the plate moves for you. If it does, the diaphragm is OK. No movement means it is holed. They are not worth buying new (very spendy last time I enquired) and wrecker dizzies always bust eventually.
Chances are there other more significant issues with your EA81 (if it is like my own) and chasing down the extra weensy performance gain this offers is probably not worth your while.
If you feel like it I know certain wreckers who are happy to part out disties to sell you the vacuum advance unit. Sunspares usually has some lurking around.
Good luck!
