92 lib wagon + some questions

Post by kndkris » Sat Nov 08, 2008 5:58 pm

Hi all,
here is the new wagon.
basically its a straight as 92 gx auto wagon. Still got the working air suspension. 260kms on the clock. cost me 4000 so im pretty happy as it is the cleanest i have ever looked at.

Image

Problems
-lights on original tape deck not working
-interior roof light seems intermittent (have changed globes to test)
-auto box is super sloppy, need a new one, very slow to grab gear and will roll backwards on a slight hill in D with the engine running

Plans
first thing will be some tint then in a couple of months with the help of some mates over at perth-wrx i am going to do the turbo conversion, keeping it auto and lifting it up 2-3 with some 27's under it. I want a neat car that can still get me to the surf spots down south and be great on the beach, i am going to try do it all under 8000 including the car, so ive got around 4000 to play with.

Took it down south this weekend and ran great, went for a quick spin on the beach and nearly got a bit bogged but a bit of a run up to the ramp sorted me out. getting about 450 out of a tank which is ok i think, and currently sits at 3000rpm exactly at 110km/h

ok, some questions.

1)what size rims and tyres can i fit under it as it is right now, could i get a set of gt forrester rims under it?

2)Will changing the front window seals stop that insane wind noise??? it is so bad on the way home i gaffa taped the seals up, hehe, meant i couldnt get out of the car until i got home but it was nice and quiet.

3) does anyone know why the lights on the tape deck would not be working? i kinda like the original style of it and will not be changing it as i will run a seperate screen for my audio.

Cheers everyone
Kris

Nice Liberty i got a white Liberty wagon also, but its got retarded red and black strips along the sides of the vehicle, making it look shit, otherwise good paint job. Mines a manual not an auto, but it does have the fully functional Air Suspension like yours.

I see your rides got a Mandurah number plate. Taken it for a fang around that Tokin Drive road in the inlet yet?

Autos are like that, reguardless whether they a new or not, always trying to find the right gear. But always missing the shift when you want it too. An idea is leave in Power mode, chew more fuel, but at least it holds gears slightly better and shift a tad better too. With it rolling back on the hill, it shouldnt do it on minor slops cause im sure those cars have hill holder in them.

now to your questions:

1) Im sure nothing bigger than 16" as it is now, because you wont be able to turn the wheels all the way.

2) Ive got the same problem with the front passenger window, when i first got the car, the window didnt wind up for some odd reason, so i took it to a family friends smash repairing place to pull it appart and force the window up. The window goes up much higher than it use to did so water doesnt come through it now, but what i got is this irritating whistling noise instead now. So either the window can go up a bit more further up into the seal to stop it whistling, or the window is up all the way and the seal is the one that needs replacing, thats the one or two problems you might have.

3) Didnt get the original deck when i bought the car, so i put in my old Clarion one i bought back in 2005. I see you want to keep the orginal deck so i suggest to ask around the place, you should get an answer that your looking for that way.

Also not sure what my cars economy is, yet to give it a proper run, but seems like you a getting reasonable good economy with your car. You can get better response and millage if you where to run the car on 95RON. Most Subaru's love the 95 and th 98 RON fuel, more over that 91 shit. Engine peform alot, i mean alot better on them.

there is no such thing as a "hill holder" on an automatic car.

rim size doesnt make any difference to what will fit on your car. overall tyre diameter does though. the reat struts are your limitation, otherwise you would fit standard size forester / outback rims and tyres eaasily.

wind noise - all Gen1's are the same. search http://www.rslibertycluib.org there is lots of fixes on there. I just ignore mine

ditch the tape deck - as if you are going to use it. you can get an aftermarket head unit dirt cheap these days, just grab one of those.

you would get about 10L / 100 on the highway. autos chew a bit mroe than the manuals. I dont notice that much difference runing premium fuels, although if you canafford it they are good for your engine.

Cool, yeah 550 is great economy, the tank seems mighty small though cause when i fill up from just above empty i am only getting 30 litres into it. Will try a tank of the good stuff next and see what happens.

I couldnt ignore the wind noise, haha, i hate the tiniest rattles let alone a plane taking off in the cabin the whole trip.

Yeah the tape deck, could replace it i suppose but i dont need one with a cd or anything, i dont even have any cds, mp3 player for everything and i never move it off triple j. Did i read somewhere that you can get a factory cover if i did change to a single din?

My friend is hopefully fitting remote central today, will be handy.

Nah i am quite sure it would be more than 30 litres, haha, i just think maybe the fuel guage is displaying incorrectly. So when it is juat above empty it could still have 10-20 litres left in it.

Ahh, thats my hometown beach, peppermint grove beach, between busso and bunbury down south, great little spot and you can still drive on the beach.

Got the central fitted, just got a remote kit from jaycar ($50 i think) and 1 actuator for the drivers door. Works perfect, just have to fit a slight spacer between the door skin and the frame as it just touches the actuator arm but was pretty easy to do.

Also drove till it showed dead empty and filled it up with 95ron, but still could only get 44 litres in it??? does this mean i only have a 50 litre tank? or is the guage displaying wrong and i still have 15 litres in it when it displays empty?

Oh and another sidenote, bending the wing mirror frame in works perfect!!! i also added some 3mm cable to the inside of the seal, now i have nearly zero wind noise, very stoked with that. And the interior light was a loose ground, fixed now.

Rims next, have a choice between imprezas and gt forresters, will chuck them on and decide after seeing them on the car.

Nice and neat mate,
Its a common problem in the older libs with the fuel gauge. It will display empty but will most likely have some fuel left. I suggest driving with a jerry can and a fuel tank in the car, then run it dry. Also zero off the tripmeter, then you'll be certain how many ks you can get out of the tank. I and many others just go off the tripmeter.

Also what are the little chrome things on the front bumper ;) Bit a Bling

A very irritating flaw the early Liberty's had. Ive delt with the stupid guage for too long so ive arranged this week to get it fixed for good, prob gonna cost $400 in total but i want it done, im sure its the left sender unit. Pretty sure the Liberty's have a 60liter fuel tank in it, just like the L-Series range.

So youve fixed the whistling problem with your Liberty? How did you do it excatly???? Im going to give it a try what ever you did to bring the noise to a stop.

Gen 1 & 2 Libs has 60L tank, possibly the fuel gauge is reading incorrectly.. just rely fuel light ;)

My Gen2 EJ22 wagon gets around 550-600kms a tank.
Cheers

Tint a car in northbridge, its just down the road which makes it easy for me, its for the midnight express or something like that. was thinking of going darker to something like 20% but i figured id keep it legal so i dont get any attention after my plans are finished.

Thats great economy, i will grab a 5 litre can and see what i get with this tank.

And my gear box still blows... wondering if i should get it looked at or keep the money for the half cut, didn't want to start work on that until after the christmas/music festival season

My last car had a good set of tints on them as well, it was up in a place in Malaga, got it done in January 2006, i think the name of the place in SunGuard. The tints where brilliant.

The tint i had on my Leone was the Ultima range, these tints werent the darkest avaliable, but they where the darkest legal tints possible. The name of the tints where Ultima, kinda had a silvery gleam colour in the sun light they had. These tints had the lifetime guarantee on them, fade and peel resistant, these tints still look good on the ride today. The costed $265 then. Ive been given a quote $320 to get it done on the Liberty wagon plus to get the old tints taken off. Is this too much paying for what im getting?
