EA82T engine mods

Post by subynewbie » Sat Nov 29, 2008 1:24 pm

Im new to the suby world and id like to know what can you do to the EA82 engine to safely put out about 200hp-250ish hp, or is that a redicoulous request? im currently in the middle of rebuilding the front end of my 74 porsche 914 after i rear ended somebody about a week ago. ouch!!! so i want to do a suby conversion to an ea82t engine. they are liter than my 914 engine and i cant hardly get any power out of my engine. my engine weighs approx 300lbs and i was looking around for the weight figures, and i saw that the svx engine weighs around 285lbs. is that correct?. well if it is im sure the ea82t is much liter. also do the ea82t engines require vavle adjustments? and if so how long between adjustments. id like to know as much as possible about these engines so feel free to let me know anything i should know. and if my info is wrong let me know.
thnx in advance
steven

If you want 200+ HP. Dont even bother with the EA82T. You will be lucky to make 160HP reliably without spending massive amounts of money.

I dont know about weights, but here are some Horse Powers

If you want that much HP, go for an EJ turbo variant.
You can have an EJ20G (2.0L Single Turbo) out of a WRX that stock makes about 200HP. (the STI version makes closer to 300HP)
There is the EJ20H (2.0L Twin Turbo) from a Liberty B4 which stock makes around 250HP.
There is the EJ255 (2.5L Turbo) from later WRX's with about 230HP

If you want a 6 cylinder, there is either the 3.3L EG33 which came from the SVX which makes 230HP or an EZ30 from late model Liberties and Outbacks which makes 212HP (or 250HP in the EZ30R version)

well my porsche is a work in progress. im tired of my car looking somewhat quick but not being able to take even the lamest of civics. right now it has a 1.8 type 4 vw motor. probably 85hp stock. i have a custom exhaust whic i estimate to boost it too about 100hp along with the 2.0l intakes and throttle body.i got it about 5 years ago. i just recently put in a sway bar in the front, these cars didnt come stock with sway bars. big improvement in cornering/handling. i have lowered the car, about 3 inches in the front and about 2 in the back. this car is the product of a colaborative effort between vw and porsche in the during 1969-1976. between 70-72 porsche put a more powerful 2.0 6 cylinder that produced 125hp. those are rare and cost a pretty penny if they are in good shape. these cars came with fuel injection stock. and i still run the fuel injection. there is the l-jet and d-jet tronic fuel injections, i prefer the l-jet, it has an airflow meter box instead of a vacuum regulater to control the mixture, the l-jet is much more accurate with fuel metering. i have heard a lot of guys say the stock fuel injection is crap, which is totaly not true, they make it crap becuz they dont know how to take care of the FI system. the porsche 914 has 4wheel independent suspension, 4wheel disc brakes, manual 5 speed, no power anything pretty much. the front suspension is a single torsion bar wishbone set up with mcpherson struts. it has rack and pinion steering. the rear suspension is coil over shock setup upt mounted to a trailing arm, the car is a unibody making it pretty light. my car only weighs about 2000lbs. thats just a general overview of the car. oh one more thing. the type 4 vw engines are heavy for their size. they weigh about 300lbs which is crap. anyways id like to convert to a suby engine because some variants are lighter and produce more power and are more tunable.

Is the motor in there air cooled or water cooled?

Your cheapest option would be to find a legacy front cut and put the EJ22 (2.2L with around 120HP) in there. These cars should be pretty common in the states.

it is an aircooled motor, all the engine that came stock in either the vw or porsche 6 version were aircooled. i can convert watercooled engines though.
that is gonna be one mean porsche 914

Hey
Just go the ej route, much more power, more after market parts, much more reliable,ea's are old technology, the ej22's n/a are 100kw over here, the ej20t's are 160kw and up,a mate of mine fitted an ej20t in a fiberglass 911,fitted good,he was running a 4speed kombi box, biggest problem was getting a clutch to handle all the power. Will your box handle it or will you need a g50 box?
I just imported a 68 firebird from CA.

well they match chevy 350 small blocks to my model transmission and they hold up pretty good, i would most likely have to get a racing clutch though
