Economy?

Just wondering if this economy figure is high or not?

Ive been chewing nearly a fuel 60 liter fuel tank in 400km worth of driving, it seems extremmly high. The car is a Series 1 Subaru Liberty GX. The 2.2 EJ22 is getting really crappy economy, the last Subaru i had, was a Leone running on a 1.8L MPFI EA82, that got 550km out of a 60Liter fuel tank.

What is the average economy you are spose to get out of the EJ22 2.2 Engines?

Depending on usage you should fall in the 18 to 24 mpg range. My ea82t gets 28-29 mpg regardless of how much I stand on the gas.

regardless of how big your tank is, how much fuel are you putting in for each 400kms?

i get about 480km out of mine around town but there is only 5L left in the tank when I drive this far

thats not right, i get better economy from my 2L turbo(and thats driving slightly spirited)

you should be looking around the 10l/100km or less.

60L in 400km is 15L/100km! That's terrible!

(well, it's not too bad, but it's worse than it should be)

The best I've gotten on my gen2 outback is 9.788L/100km (which is 24.03MPG). Even that's bad, compared to the gummint testing. (which was 9.5L/100km or so) I usually get around 10.3L/100km - that best one was a bit of highway driving and me mizering on the accelerator and coasting to traffic lights or shutting off the engine at railway crossings, etc. Pain in the arse.

Once I go electric it'll be 0L/100km! ahahaha!

i reckon thats a bit excessive. assuming your spark plugs are nice, your coils and leads are nice, air filter clean, correct type and grade of oil, fuel filter clean, and tyres inflated correctly, i'd be putting it on a gas analyser and/or having a look at o2 sensor operation or coolant temp sensor operation, that makes a huge difference to economy, sometimes without running problems. we had a magna at work that was chomping about 16 litres per 100km, running rich... not by a lot, but enough to make consumption go through the roof. ended up putting two o2 sensors in it, brought economy down to about 9 litres per 100km...

my carbied ea82, with 330000km on it, runs quite ok, but chomps fuel at about 10-12 litres per 100km which i think is excessive.... but i haven't gotten to the bottom of that yet...

Its gotta be the o2 sensor, plugs and leads are fine, tyres are on the right PSI, i should change the oil sometime soon. Ive been running on 98RON the pass few fill ups to clean all the shit out. Gone back on 95, since its chewing up that much fuel.

What price would i be looking at for a new o2 sensor?

hard to say, i think the bosch universal ones were a few hundred... i think? i've never owned anything with an o2 sensor and I don't pay too much attention to the prices of the ones i replace for other people, i focus more on the actual fixing of the problem

before you get all carried away, it would be worth pulling the o2 sensor(s) out and having a look, if they are dead they normally carbon up something shocking. there should be one before and one after the cat i think? the front one plays the most important role in controlling the air fuel ratio, the back one is more for emissions. subaru call the front one an air/fuel sensor and the back an o2 sensor but i would be probably putting an aftermarket one in...

For me - EJ22 Liberty Gen2, I'm getting around 550-600kms a tank average. How old are the O2 sensor? Might be worth checking out. They're about $70 after market ones - get bosch brand.

Around 400km out of a 60 Liter fuel tank, not running it dead dry, so more like 55Liters worth of fuel. So im getting around 14L/100km to just over 15L/100km.

Still it sounds extremmly high. TBH i though i would be getting at best 9L/100km to at the max of 12L/100km. But 15km/100km, FM! thats extremmly high for a naturally aspirated vehicle.

So hopefully its the o2 sensor, or the front fuel/air sensor.

Q:
Christian, what economy did you get out of this car? What parts where on its way out also?

start paying attention when you fill up and write down the actually amount you are putting in. Plenty of people describe 40L as "a tank" just because some guages show empty at about 20L left

Measure L/100km or km/L.. This amount per tank just doesn't work because you should never run your tank dry in a EFI car.

I used to get 7 to 8 L/100km with my EJ22 in a Brumby. I would imagine 9 to 11 L/100km should be right for a Liberty.

Is your check engine light on?

Engine light isnt on. I would of noticed that. Does idle a bit rough though when you start the engine, but it eventually goes smooth once you get going.

I keep an eye when i always fill up how many liter goes in. 2nd last time i put 55 liters of BP 98 in, after 330km, i went to put more fuel in the car. 42 liters i think it was, so 15L/100km im roughly getting, which is BS cause the EJ20 turbo would get better economy, than what im getting.

Who can recommend me to a good place in Northern Metro Perth to check out the o2 sensor on my Liberty? Im flat out with work so i dont have time myself to get a after market one and check it myself.

I was assuming i was going to just a liter or two more liters per 100km out of the EJ22 over my old EA82. But getting 15L/100km was a suprise i was expecting something just over the 10s. When i have a moment on the weekend ill get to it. The cars is running good atm, better since the right CV replacment.

Q.
The blower fan/AC is weak a piss at the moment not to much force coming from it, and the temp is ok. How can you get those things up to speed again? Cause i remember you saying you got the AC regassed, was that all?

I need to take some snaps of your old Liberty its looking majorly progressively better than before, looking sweet atm:D Need to upgrade from the steels though, lol.

Nah,
From my experience it doesn't show, where about the new one shows the difference - a lot of people had that problem.
I was talking to a guy in auto store he said (hes a mechanic himself) that O2 sensors normally lasts at 160,000kms but he said if it was him, he'll change it between 100,000 to 130,000kms.
