Fitting new wheels on L

Post by someguy » Sun Mar 29, 2009 8:36 pm

Hi guys.

Well the time has finally come to ditch the stock black 13" wheels that came with my L series.

I have some 14" sunnies from my old rodeo that I am getting redrilled to suit the subies 4 stud pattern tomorrow.

The question I have is: As the rims and tires are a fair bit bigger than the stockies will that throw my speedo out at all (don't wanna get done by the speed cameras on P plates :P)?

Thanks

p.s they are getting the rust sanded out and repainted

27" tyres on my L mean the speedo reads about 10% less than actual speed, i.e. speedo 100 = gps 110.

yeah atleast it says your going slower.

if you were going faster than it reads then you will get plenty of speeding tickets.

Ummm GPS and speed camera are gonna see 110 if speedo on GODs L says 100. The speedo is inaccurate so the error is ~10% and the opposite to what you sound like you understand in the post above

Maybe I was unclear. My actual speed (on the gps) IS faster than what the speedo shows. You'll always get that when going to bigger wheels.

Edit: I need to type faster. Steptoe got it.

my bad.

Shows how good I am when im tired :P

One last question besides it being illegal is there any risks in redrilling wheels ? (because im still a newbie and can't afford to pay someone to help me with a 6 stud conversion, unless the hubs from an 84 Rodeo would fit the subie :P)

i did it and drove around with no hassel's, but i re-drilled all the way around the rim to make it look like a multi stud pattern. and yes it is illegal.

6 studing is also illegal and not that hard if you can work a drill and angle grinder, it just takes time.

If you get the hubs re-drilled at an engineering place you shouldn't have a problem. You'll use 2 of the original holes anyway from what I understand of 6 stud conversions...

Just get an old Subaru drum hub and punch out two opposing studs. Bolt the other two to the 6 stud wheel, centre punch and drill new holes, then weld up extra holes, grind flat (both sides) and paint - no-one will ever know.

I would rather modify the wheel than change the hubs...
