hey guys, im new to this and seeking some advice about my subie lib 92...
i have had the coil pack replaced (i think thats wat its called) as it was failing causing the engine to stall upon load most noticably when going up hills. once replaced, the car ran well for a period of about 10 months before the problem again re-appeared.
the syptoms of this issue are as follows...
- upon depressing the pedal (automatic transmission) subsequently causing the engine to become under load the engine will knock (i recently replaced the spark plugs, and this solved the problem for a short period, but still knocking slightly although lately it has gone back to its old self).
- if the knocking is consistent (a hill), one of the cylinders will procede to miss fire causing loss of power and sometimes the engine to stall... upon stopping and if the engine is still running, the engine will vibrate of its harmonic balance.
- when the car is turned off for approx 30 seconds and turned over again, the problem is no longer present and the car runs normally, but again the engine still knocks
personally i think it could be the ignition timing, but im not really sure as to why i am asking for some advice/help...

If I were you I'd check the timing to see if its in correct position, that would be the first place to look at. Just remove left and right covers not middle cover and check if the notches are at the top to match the centre (crankshaft) notch..

haha... man, i thought no one would reply hahaha...
yea, its ej22, efi, 205,000km's and im not sure when the timing belt was replaced... although lately its been getting worse. tends to do it the most when its cold now but again still on hills... im hoping its not the timing belt and something simple like a lead or pump because its going to cost a mint to get fixed if its the belt... sigh... its at the shop now and the blokes having a look at it... getting the scanner in and all to see if there anything on the memory... ill keep u posted

ok ok.... so the ECU was checked, nothing significant was found... apparently the oil was old and the mechanic reckons that perhaps chunks of oil where blocking the hydraulic oil pump, preventing proper lubrication and messing with the valves under load subsequently causing one of the cylinders to miss fire... but he still thinks that the timing belt could be a worry.... but what he doesnt know is that this has occurred the last time i took it too him and if it were possibly the timing belt it would have most probably snapped already...

I'd also look at the fuel pressure regulator, this may be malfunctioning causing a leaning out of fuel under load = early detonation or an explosion that is too small to do the job. When was the last time your fuel filter was replaced?
If one cylinder is Knocking constantly it may be more than a fuel or spark issue. Does the engine knock on start up (deep thud that is constant with engine revs)? One way to check this is with a long screw driver, place the flat head/phillips head end on the block while the engine is running, put your ear on the handle end making sure no clothing is going to catch in the fan belt. If you hear the same knocking noise from the screw driver you can be sure its your big end bearings, this means an engine pull down.
That said, a big end bearing that's worn shouldn't be producing these issues... Have you had the cooling system pressure checked to make sure its not a head gasket?
All the best with this, I know it can be frustrating, especially when you've gotta watch the hip pocket...
