Yes, but only the standard rear diffs that come in a turbo RX L series, or a turbo Vortex L series.

If you have ANY other L series with it's original rear diff, then it's an open one.

Nah they were open unless optional fitted or aftermarket fitted.

Sorry but if I hear of anything rare/good/that I need it will be me that has first dibs! Fair enough for asking though. I know the feeling about the one at a time bit too...

I'm sorry to say, but the Rear LSD issue is pretty simple - as AP and AT have said:

LSD's came factory in:
- RX turbo L series
- Vortex (i'm sure its the xt 4wd turbo model you want for this)

Non LSD's came out in every other shape of L series if it has a rear diff...

Kapi'sh?

If you find a 3.9 LSD, grab it as you can swap the diff centre (the LSD part we're all after) into a 3.7 ratio ring gear ;) I'm sure AndrewT has done a write up about it - if it wasn't him then it was someone else :D

Cheers

I think your more likely to find the LSD as a 3.7.
If your gearbox is a 3.9 then you can re-ratio the LSD diff to a 3.9, you just need a 3.9 open diff as a donor.

For an example scenario here's what I did;

My 1986 RX Turbo sedan came factory fitted with a 3.7 Clutch LSD rear diff.
I wasn't using the car so I stole the diff out of it.

My wagon was running a 4.111 AWD Outback gearbox at the time with a 4.111 open rear diff.

I cracked open the LSD diff, removed the centre and took the 3.7 ring gear off it, leaving me with just the LSD centre sitting on the bench.

Then I cracked open the 4.111 open diff, removed the centre, took the 4.111 ring gear off it, and chucked the open centre away.
I then put the 4.111 ring gear onto the LSD centre, and stuffed it all back into the 4.111 housing.

Now my wagon has a 4.111 Clutch LSD in it (something which Subaru never actually made lol). :)

For interest's sake, I was left with the choice of which backing plate to put on my newly constructed diff. The wanky one that says "3.7 LSD" or the one that just says "4.111".
I choose to put the one that says 4.111 on as I think it's more important to display the correct ratio than wether it's LSD or not, just incase I forget when I one day put it in another car or something.
All this talk about LSD's......I think I might figure out how to put a security lug nut (like you get for mag wheels) through the mounts of my diffs incase some bugger decides to hop under my car and nick it!
It's happened to Alex not so long ago, some bastard stole his rear CV's and canon muffler from his wagon parked right out the front of his house!
Theiving L series owner grrrr.

I wasn't in WA then... So that's me outta the count, not that I've ever theived anything from someone else's car! That's plain crazy! He would've been mega pissed...

Anyway, off topic again :???:

ok guys,

One last final question about the diff.
Could you tell me exactly or as accurate as possible what diff came off the vortex and what diff came off the rx leone. 3.7 or 3.9 clsd open etc.

From what i undersatnd i know the vsld is from liberty and the vortex and rx leone should be clsd.

But plz state vortex = what
and Rx leone = What.

so i can go on a hunt.
Thx

Both Vortex 4x4 and RX 4x4 would have had CLSD 3.7 but only if it was optioned from new. I think it's still possible for both these cars to have come out with an open diff.
I havn't heard of a 3.9 ratio CLSD existing, however as stated you can easily re-ratio them to whatever you like (3.7, 3.9, 4.111, 4.444) so what ratio it is really shouldn't be a concern - it's the least of your worries.

Either way they are easy to identify - the sticker will say LSD, or you can tell by which way the wheels rotate, or take the backing plate off and look inside - reference the pics Alpine posted earlier.

Correct Viscus were only available in EJ based cars - Gen1 Liberty/Legacy RS and up.

Thats correct, it will work. If its already got 3.7 in it then there is no need.. There should be 37teeth on the crown and 10teeth on the pinion,
Good luck finding one!

Well for the lift kit i have decided to go 4"

Im saving up as its a woping $700 from byb.
Phill is atempting to build his own so if that goes well i might get some from him but he is very busy with work etc. So as soon as i save up enought, i'll buy the first kit available.

I still on the look out for a 3" as it might be too hard and expensive to get the 4".

Also in the mean time im looking for all those goodies that will also cost a few $$$

Will keep the upgrade posted on the my page below:)

Oh im also thinking of doing a secret body mod:P but i'll only tell when i'll do it:)

Well actually i need some advice for the secret so i think i'll have to spit it out. Its nothing extra, just a sunroof lol.
I found this manual pop up sunroof from a HZ or HX i think and im kinda thinking of installing it in my car.

But it seems to be a bit big:P the roof width of the car, before that touring bump is 105cmx57cm and the sunroof is 93x46cm thats including the rubber molding around. I wanted to find out you thoughs about installing that, specially thoughts on if it would afect the solidity of the roof and cause it to twist when i take the car offroad?

I am starting a new post for this, cause a AT said, its a liftkit post:P
Plz leave you thoughts, advice etc
Much appriciated
