Bigger wheels on Brumby - what fits?

I have a 1984 Brumby I havent had for long and want to fit some larger diameter wheels to give me more ground clearance when going over well used sand tracks. The wheels on it are standard 13 inch. What is the largest size wheel I can fit that will clear the guards without fitting a lift kit? and what wheels are they from? other subarus or what? Thanks for your help. Spin

there are 14 inch sunrasias around but it is hard to find a good second hand set let alone a new set but they do exist I see plenty of them running around in the southest of WA

older 14 -15 inch 4 stud Peugeot rims will fit (no lift kit required with 14 inch) but beware of the metric rims as they will be cheap but tyres will cost the national debt of Peru

redrilling your hubs to allow 14 inch six stud tyres to fit is another option or redrilling the six stud rim to allow for the original 4 stud subaru hubs to be used is another way

sadly most of these options require a lift kit of at least 3-4 inches

The good old 14" rim / 27" tyre combination is the most popular for MY / L series. I beleive this fits very well on a Brumby without a lift kit and may only require very slight cutting of guards.
You can go bigger (like 29" ever 30") but you have to get a body lift kit.

You can get brand new 14" rims to suit your stud pattern all over Perth very easily, I think they can be had for about 90 bucks each.

The 27's will rub with out a kit. I think it is around a 195x70/14 that you can fit with out any rubbing.

This is a pet peev of mine, no offence to anyone but your asking the wrong question.
The rim size has very little to do with rubbing/fitment issues.
The only difference the rim makes is what offset it is.

The question you meant to ask is what is the largest tyre size that will fit?
The answer is about 25inch diameter.

This can be achieved on 13",14",15",16",17" or even 18" rims.
Fire up a Tyre size claculator and play with tyre width, profile and rim size till you find something that sounds good then ring around for prices.

Or ask poeple what Tyre size they're running...

End rant...

Before i lifted it i was running 185R13 on my Brumby, then i got some 14's with 185/70/14 tyres, i found the 13's better offroad but the 14's looked much better!

Thanks everyone gives me some good ideas. Yeah the question could have been asked better, I knew what I was asking but not strictly worded correctly

. Might go for 14 inch rims as plenty of tyres in that size are available. Looks like the 195x70x14 is the go according to the calculator if 25 inches is the max. See if I can find some Peugeot rims. Thanks again will let you know what I find. thanks Spin:-D

If you don't care about guard cutting then speak to phizinza. He's running 27's on an unlifted MY sedan with the suspension wound up and a bit of guard trimming. He hasn't had any problems AFAIK so far.

I think with the MY's to clear guards without any rubbing with 27's you need a 2 inch lift. The advantage the MY's have is that you can wind up the struts and rear torsion bar for extra lift.
