insurance and dpi 3" lift wa

hi all

i am planning to put a 3" lift in my 1990 l series

i have spoken to my insurance company (rac) and DPI

rac said that ill need to install the lift kit then they will have a look at it and decide if they want to insure it. does that seem right?

i also spoke to the DPI and they said 2" lift is fine no permit needed
3" lift a permit is needed and a lane change test

so my questions are

1. has any one installed a 3" lift and got a permit?

2. has any one done the lane change test in a 3" lifted subi and did it pass?

3. can i just put the kit on and expect not to get pulled over ?

4. i read that changing gears gets difficult after a lift 2" or more, how much modding is needed to get it back to normal?

Well since no one is offering first hand knowledge, here's what I've picked up:

1. Dunno. Doubt it.
2. Dunno.
3. Yes. Every vehicle I've owned has been modified and technically unroadworthy, but none has been defected. Just don't be a dick and you'll be fine. It also seems that if you take an unregistered vehicle over the pits (so they aren't looking at a particular defect or an engine swap), lots of mods will get through unnoticed.
4. Haven't heard that.

What the RAC told you sounds strange. Call them back until you get someone useful.

Or you could just get a 2" lift and know it's going to be legal. Or (at the risk of offending most of this forum) you could leave it unlifted and find some other way to get over your adequacy issues

Worry about it when you get a sticker or pay a minimum of $400 to get it engineered, they are getting pretty tough on suspension mods now, I had to get mine engineered because I put Foz struts & GD front arms in mine and it is only a 2" lift, but I have the peace of mind that it's legal & covered by insurance, easier to go 2" and go up a size in tyre, going from 50 profile to 60 gave me am extra 2cm, you could also go for stronger springs which will probably give it a further 2-3cm
