New Engine Purchased and Fitted for $1000??

I got talking to a guy about his Subaru Brumby one day, and he had claimed to have had a an engine with 50,000km purchased from Melbourne and shipped to Tasmania for a total of $800, and a mate put it in for $200, so pretty much a new engine for his Brumby in and running for $1000,

Does this sound correct? has anyone got any stories like this or done this themselves?? or was there a fair bit of exaggeration going on?

It's possible, but you'd be searching for a while before you find an EA82 with Ks that low. You'd also have to be pretty lucky to know someone willing to R&R an engine for $200.

He said something about it being an import if i remember right? from overseas? japan? or am i totally off the tracK?

if u can not remove a engine and replace it with a engine as it is only 1hour to do a slap with the engines .
3-4 hours is all u need if u know what u are doing and if it was a Japan inport no proloms.

Ah yes, I guess an import engine could have low kays like that. Ring some wreckers and importers, see what they've got. But don't count on a second hand engine, even a good one, having no leaks and good ancillary bits.

And for installation, there's also the option of doing the pulling apart work yourself, and towing the car to your mechanic to get the new one put in.

Yeah i might have a chat to that guy again and find out some more detail, would that of come with everything needed for the car? or would some additional parts need to be purchased/salvaged?

Sorry, i could of worded it better, say if you where going to put a new imported engine in, what parts would you keep from under the hood the would be needed when putting the new engine in?

quite often with engine of this era the import carb and manifold is removed in favour of the local not so restricted version. Can only think an engine of this age to have been sitting around a very long time since it was removed from car in Japan. I have seen some motors claimed to be 'an import' but just pulled from a locally sold car - if it is in good running order noone generally cares, I do. One with 50k km from Japan normally better than a local with 200k km still go equally as good - for a while.

One of the forum members bought an l-series wagon with under 50000 km the whole car is in showroom condition you will find things like that from time to time.

I agree... you just gotta look real hard to find that good stuff.. I found 1995 Liberty last year only did 25,000kms and was in mint condition owned by old deceased estate.
