Where to buy Tow Hitch kit?

Post by gggplaya » Tue Oct 20, 2009 8:32 am

Hey, I live in the U.S. and subaru doesn't offer a tow kit for the impreza here in the states. Almost no cars do, only SUV's. My guess is because of braking performance and standards here in the U.S. Possibly also crash ratings.

Anyways, does anyone know where i can order a Tow bar kit for my 2008 impreza sedan? It's very similar to the Impreza R base model in australia, just a beefier 2.5L engine. My car is a 5 speed manual and i know it'll be more wear on the clutch and drivetrain.

Is the tow kit just a hitch and wiring harness? Does it come with anything else?

Looking for some useful links to a website or dealer that ships to the U.S.

--Thanks!

no unfortunately they do not here in the states. Our manual says our cars aren't supposed to be able to tow anything at all. The dealer doesn't offer the tow kit for any impreza or Legacy. Structurally i don't see how they would change it from an australian model to a north american model. Especially since my car was built in Japan.

It's just the american government has very strict policies on braking performance when trailering.

I just want to tow a small trailer with my GSXR 600 on it which is about 450kgs total.

I was just wondering if there were any popular websites you Aussies shop at for parts?

We have companys down hear who locate parts in Japan, buy them and ship them to you.
I reckon your best bet would be to find someone in the states doing that.
Mostly used for JDM performance parts, so check websites/magazines etc.

Hayman-Reese are about the biggest in Australia, they have a range to suit the 08 Impreza: http://www.haymanreese.com.au/index.htm

This one should suit: SUBARU 3/1993-on 1815 Impreza 2WD 4WD Sedan, Hatch & WRX (Does not fit STI MY03, RS Sedan MY04) (C) $343.00 900/75

(If the above is suitable it may even be possible to find an Impreza at a wrecking yard which the unit could be pulled from, which would save you a bunch).

Shipping will be spendy, though (they won't ship direct to the US, but plenty of members here could forward it on for you (myself included). Have you thought of trying a Canadian or Mexican towbar company as they won't have the DOT to worry about...

Other potential concerns would be if you're in an area with annual inspections (don't know if that applies to PA) and of course if you did have an accident with the trailer attached what your coverage would be.

thanks a bunch dfoyl. That's exactly what i'm looking for. They have a 2008/2009 hitch that seems to match the factory subaru hitch as far as ratings go at least.

They do ship outside of australia, but it looks like you have to email them.
