How d0 you mount a stereo in a L series dash
How d0 you mount a stereo in a L series dash
Gday I picked up an 88 L series for $300 and am sick of no sound how do you and what do you mount it to plus keep the little storage box under it.
Thanks Jon:???:

If you mean how to mount the actual stereo unit you will need a buy a face plate kit 'thingy'.
The company Aerpro sell one:
Aerpro
You can order these through Supercheap and so on. They have a little storage space in the kit but you have to buy the pocket as separate piece.

They are a bitch because the distance from the dashboard to the heater box is too small to fit any standard headunits.
The idea is basically to build up some kind of replacement facia that sticks out.
I did have a thought about modifying the heater box by recessing the front instead, but its a lot of effort on a $300 car:p
Actually got one that was made for an RX turbo I once owned. I think its still around, but it doesn't have a shelf underneath though.
Alternatively, you could put a stock head unit (radio only) & cassette player (fits underneath) in.

Yeah if you get the right kit they are already positioned far enough out to allow clearance.

The Sony in my MY fits with just a 10mm spacer covered in vinyl, but as for the L series, you are pretty much stuck for the Aerpro spacer or mount it on an angle so the top fits and its out the way of the gear shift

No customising whatsoever is required if you buy the kit from a car stereo place for like 10 bucks. It just goes in and works perfectly fine. Looks stock, black plastic.

I made mine from a block of wood. It's always a laugh with mates who haven't seen it before or forget about it after a while as I didn't finish it. I'll have to get a pic for you once I'm near my subi again
Its become the place to put the sticker from your apple...

Sounds like mine, But I didn't think I had a picture of it on here...steptoe wrote:I was surprised to see a unti installed in a Brumby without the poking out further mods, and no one cut a hole in the heater box behind. It was JVC of some sort - designed with some compasion for old Subie owners
My old head unit fitted perfectly not so much the newer one but its not so much the head unit more the cables that plug into the back. If you can get a unit with fly leads in the back instead of plugs you should be laughing!

We used the same as Keffa's facia yesterday in Glen's wagon. It was under $30 from Repco but I'm sure Malz or Supercrappy's would have them.

You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

i put in a pioneer head deck, with no problems. Was a bit tight because of the heater but still sits nice and flush, no spacer needed. I have Alpine 180W 4" splits in the doors and 2 Pioneer 440w 6x9" 3 ways in boxes behind the seats, all up cost me $400 and installed myself, still waiting for the cash to introduce an amp which i will bolt down under the passenger seat.
I think there are a few head decks that will fit straight in, otherwise like the other guys said get a spacer or get creative and make your own.
