Racecar Transporter

Somewhere along the line everyone eventually will come to the conclusion that towing a car trailer behind whatever chariot you happen to drive changes from being "cheap and convenient" to "this is a crazy way to travel". After much deliberation we have decided to step up to an 8 tonne truck for the next year or two. If we survive that and our sponsors are happy then we might look at a semi trailer for 2012.

I've started this thread to show off our new transporter. It's a 2006 Hino with a Tadano crane and we recently picked up a 20 foot container to throw on the back. The container is a little heavier than your average pantech but it's not likely to fall apart on our roads. Having the crane means we can pick up the car but also load and unload the container into the pit area to save climbing up into the back of the truck all the time.

No, not now. It's geared well with the pan on. Sits on 102 all day. Jim reckons apart from the speed, you don't even know it's there. Chews a bit more juice than we thought it would but we'll see what happens when we build the nose cone.
Jim's pimping the truck by swapping the 4 Hella Predators off his 'Cruiser and fitting an Alpine deck to run the ipod, transformer for the laptop, tinting the windows and probably a fridge. I want to put a DVD player/screen in the bunk and black-out curtains.
Might have to do chip and 'zaust too!

thats a bloody great idea. get to the pits, drop the container off, and you still have a vehicle to get around town in.

Love it and you could still afford to claim it for work and its definitely a multi purpose vehicle! So did it already have the twist locks fitted or are they still to come! Also we had some really well set up containers one of my favorites had a drop down side with a roll out awning so you still had a solid floor and a roof so most importantly you had room to move and all the bench grinders component drawers etc stayed organized and permanently secured...

Im glad things are looking up for you and getting to the race meets will be a bit more comfee for you.

I gess you will be fitting it out with work bench and racks and stuff for all your gear/tools and spares and other stuff??

I hope that crane is up to the job once you have all your gear inside.

It's just a flat bed tray so we'll need to modify it for twist locks. We'll mount the container towards the rear so still have 6' of tray space in front.

Thanks Rik. We'll build in a workbench and storage for plastic tubs, tyres and tools. Try not to make it too heavy so the crane can still lift it. Have to unload the car first of course. Already got some big ramps we use for loading tractors onto the truck.

Was watching WRC the other day and thought it was very cool how they have benches inside their trucks down each side so when they load the Rally Cars they drive on the benches. This looked like a great setup as it means you can have good benches and you can put spares under the car between the benches.
Compared to putting the car in and trying to pack stuff around it.
The other great thing about the benches this way was that everything could stay packed and not need to be moved etc to get the cars in and out.

I was just thinking that you can mount the generator outside the container, fit a few recliner lounges and some sat TV so the pit crew has some thing to do while you're racing. Oh, did I mention reverse cycle air con? After all we are going to have your car so reliable we will just be there to spectate from now on.

and and and one of those poshy roll out awnings for the side of it.

ooh and a fridge......... sure to be more when I think of it.

Emphasise the XXXX girls and ill bring my own grog, Sounds like your going to need a bus or railway cab for the pit crew.
