Broken timing belt - EA 82 L series wagon

Hey all,

Just broke front-right timing belt on EA82 L-series wagon :(

Has anyone else done the same, and if so was it difficult to replace?

yes and no its not hard to fix, go get manual from the auto store, its tells you what to do in it.

it would be good idea to change both side timing belts, its not hard to do if you know how to use your tools well.

And replace the idler and adjustment pulleys as they may sieze with the new belts causing the same problem...

Its fiddly but can be done at home, just follow any instructions and post the problems you can't solve ;)

"as they may sieze" ??? I think Bennie says this from experience, and take note of the low torque setting for these tensioner bolts

Yeah sorry, I didn't proof read that one and was typing in a hurry (was micro sleeping :()

remove radiator
remove timing covers
no need to remove all the other stuff, the book goes overboard. set up new belts as shown in book.
good idea to replace crankshaft oil seal, oil pump oil seals (2 of) ,and check out water pump while you have it all off.

Gregory’s manual is indeed comprehensive; so I'll take your advice Tony and remove radiator and timing covers (also fan, and main and airconditioning belts). I'll let u all know how it goes!

Sorry mate forgot to mention belts, thought it was obvious.
if you have air con you will need to pull the bolts on that to get the water pump off, as there is a small water hose under it from the top of the water pump, it springs leaks and is an absolute sod to get at so replace it now.sit the air con compressor on the side.
the fan bolts are about 10mm and are a bit awkward to get at, best to reach from under the car, remove the radiator surround,if there is not air con there is a bit more room to get at stuff and you can reach the bolts from the front after removing the radiator.
do both timing belts although the engine is non interference and will not damage when belt breaks it is a nuisance when they do break so might as well fit now.

if you have fixed fan on water pump, i found the shaft has a 22mm flat to use a 22mm open end spanner to hold fan in place to undo the 10mm nuts on fan
