How well do Performance Superlites fit an L Series .

Post by discopotato03 » Sun Mar 28, 2010 11:51 pm

Hi all , I've heard it said that Performance superlites are not really the correct offset for L Series cars .
Does anyone have pics of them on an L Series ?

Cheers A .

Just the excuse I needed, can you wait a while? Swap from Brum to Cheap Grief. You are normally quite specific on detail, but you no mention size. I got 15 x 6. QIKRX, I think , had 15x 7.

Sorry about that , had been looking into 14" wheels and most aftermarket wheels are 13 or 14" .

14's preferably as they would be lighter and the rubber probably cheaper in 60/65 profiles .

The reason I'm asking is that someone here said a while back that the offset wasn't really right for L Series cars .
Really the offset needs to be right or the steering geometry , scrub radius , isn't and I don't need any rubbing either .
I suspect that the aftermarket may be trying to cover MY and L Series but the offsets are different .

If anyone is selling these 2nd hand let me know .

Cheers Adrian .

I would definitely go the 15s as it opens up so many more tyre options

14s are difficult to get eg a low profile high performance tyre eg 195 55 14 the only ones you find are second hand or a race type tyre.

Where as 15s 195 50 15 are fairly common when compared

14s now are fairly standard fitment on small front wheel drive throw away cars so tyres are in my opinion just the same
Not really a car but motorised shopping trolley.

Also Rally Tyres are very scarce in 14s, 13s and 15s are so much more common.

Spend the extra and get the 15s
So many optioins not enough time or money:confused:

I was just thinking along the lines of unsprung weight which is important in a light weight car . I'm also not a fan of low profile tyres on light road cars .

I will look again but pretty sure Michelin are doing a 195 60 14 which would be fine .

I'll ring Performance wheels in the near future , cheers A .

Lturby Thomas has 195 55 15, seen 195 60 15 or maybe 65 series
Yeah, ditto on variety in 13 and 14 , getting harder to find big variety.

As for donuts made close to the wall. Either Ford bean counters or handling guys have chosen dunflops for their XR6's, and country of origin is... chinner

I am on kenda from same huge country

superlites are drilled to order so you can get them
but 4x140 can only be had in 8 spoke or 10 i forget whitch way round it is now
- 92 brumby, ej22, MT5AWD, lseries low range, centre diff lock, glf5 dash, 5 stud conversion
lifted 3" front 2" rear all rolling round on 27" khumo Kl71's
more in progress ie:adaptronic ecu and sc14 supercharger

So how close to std is the offset on 15 inch Superlite wheels on L Series cars .

I'll have look at a tyre size converter to see whats close diameter wise .
L Series aren't famous geometry wise so maybe a 195 60 15 could be ok .

Cheers A .

10 spoke is what I have. Close to standard what ? grey steelies or the white steel spoke sports wheel which I think was wider

It is absolutely rissing with pain out at the moment, too wet to get out and back dry to measure

I spoke to the tyre mob my family's been using for 40 years and they said Superlites generally cost 800-1000 and take about six weeks on order .

Has anyone got pics of these wheels on an L Series Sedan ?

Also checked the tyre calculator and it reckons 195/60/15 is gives about 4.5% taller gearing than std 185/70/13 .

Trouble with all this is it wouldn't be difficult to tear up a couple of thousand dollars for five wheels and good tyres .

I was quoted $260 each for 14" Superlites last year. BlackMale on here had Superlites on his red wagon - some pics here.

Mine were $1200 for four with $90 dollar tyres fitted about five years ago. Never needed a spare (coz me cousin musta driven on one flat :( giving those little round balls inside tyre when stripped )

God that picture doesn't give me confidence that those wheels would fit inside the bodywork of a std ride height RX Sedan particularly at the front .
My guess is that their offset is more negative to suit MY's .

Maybe the 15 x 6 is better suited to an L Series .

I remember the shot of 15 x 7 on the RX and thought they looked HOT as they filled the guards. MY 15 x 6 look a little showy rather than HOT. Still gotta try this swap if time permits. Swap old spares onto Brumby then Superlites onto me L, just waiting on delivery of a few jobs.

Measuring up a straight rule flat against the extreme outer edge of rim to the back of the boss that mates with the hub is about 48mm, to the next plane in from the outer edge is 42mm.

Adrian, your technical approach to this is noted. I don't think I push the handling of either car to feel the difference between standard and after market rims as far as offsets go and I suppose that changes between rim diameter and tyre profile too. These rims have had two sets of well wearing tyres on the Brumbies so far.

The 50 profile is definitely harsher in ride, a little stiffer in steering than the 65,70, and 75's. But hey, I must look cooler while at the wheel ! they are easy clean, don't need repainting, look good just standing there, and I hope a few of you are N.V.OUS :)

Probably means nothing in steering geometry but as it parked this morn, tape measure 1700mm, from outer edges of each front tyre at the front of tyre not bulge at bottom. Each tyre is 180mm of tread contact, floor to wheel arch over rim centre is 619mm front, 639mm rear

The rear measures 1685mm across at the rear of the rear tyres unbulged extreme
