Gen3 Outback - rear garnish brake light upgrade

Ok, ive converted my rear garnish so it now has brake lights.

I joined the rear fog light Blue/red wire white/black brake light wire using a push on joiner.

I then used a 25mm hole saw to cut a hole in the plastic where the light should go. Then used a sharp stanley knife to cut the knotches for the lugs on the light fitting.
I bought a light fitting and 2 male spade terminals from an auto elec for $10. I pulled the black wire out of the plug, cut off the spade terminal and joined the new black, along with the old one, crimped on a spade terminal then popped it back into the plug. A spade terminal was also fitted to the red wire and pushed into the plug

looks cool but i am pretty sure that is illegal. 3 brake lights max as far as I know.

My Gen 2 Liberty sedan before i wrote it off had 6 lights.... both side plus boot garnish & plus spoiler & rear window light.
My wagon has that option as well but it doesnt have globes in it, dunno if it works never bothered.

My Gen 2 Liberty sedan has 5 also, Legacy boot with light built into the boot above the garnish, it had 6 till I swapped the rear window for one with a wiper.

Saw a Toyota Cressida and a Tarago today and both have 5 brake lights

Did a bit of reading on ADR's and cant find anything about limits of number of brake lights.

A 4wd forum mentioned that there is a RDA rule about having brake lights on 2 different locations providing two different focal points like on Nissan Patrols and Mitsu Pajeros. This is why only the brake lights in the bumper are wired up and the combinations lights dont have brake bulbs in them

So i think im pretty safe as far as legalities go.

Number of lights, I dont think it matters, Ive seen trucks having more than 3, I remembered once it had 7lights.

Well, i can assure you that different states have different regulations and in general, from copper to copper, the knowledge they posses differs greatly. I own and daily drive an R33 GTR V-specII. It has 5 WORKING brake lights. In queensland its fine, however, when we travel down to melbourne and adelaide for dyno days and club meets i get fingered regularly about it. The best and only logical solution is to check with your local authorities or, in my case, act really really dumb.....

one would think the more brake lights the better, but who are we to argue with the pen pushers the have NFI

You have got me thinking of doing what I have wanted to do since getting my Gen4 05MYOB wagon in January.

I'd like to fit a Red Fog light in place of the drivers side reversing light.

(Anyone know if this would cause any legal probs?)

You would need to fit a reversing light somewhere. You might get away with a white light below the bumper near the towball.

I would still have a single reversing light as there are currently two - - one on each side of the tail gate.

Many european cars with Aus rego have one reversing and one rear fog - eg the 'new' beetle.

Impreza's (except STi's) only have the one reverse light on the LH side, so don't see how that would be a problem on your Outback.

Send an email to [email protected] and ask for a price on these part numbers;
84912AG261 - RH Rear Foglight.
84963AG000 - RH Rear Foglight Resistor.
84943AG010 - RH Rear Foglight Holder (some sort of small bracket).
84940AG010 - RH Rear Foglight Packing (foam seal, same as what's on the reverse light, but might aswell get it if it's a few bucks).

Will take a couple of day's for him to get back to you, is usually very helpful.
If he can't get them, you'll have to find someone in Europe to get them.

Probably getting off topic talking about Gen 4 stuff in a Gen 3 thread...

kinda related to the thread but not...
anyone know how to dismantle the rear left brake/reverse light assembly without breaking something? Its for a MY00 outback. The garnish assembly is fine but the main assembly keeps filling up with water every time it rains or i wash it.
I think it may be the drainage channels along the side of the boot but i want to fix it at the source.

Its leaking between the red garnish part and the black housing (which you can't see until you take it off).

Do a search on OzLiberty.com - there's a thread there with pictures (I think...) and destructions.

Probably not, as a lot of vehicles have that setup already. You only need on reverse light. Nissan Patrol, early Liberty, Imprezas etc. Not sure where you'd check though.
