L series manual dual range AWD with centre diff lock

Post by BlackMale » Fri Apr 07, 2006 4:23 pm

The title kinda captures it all really.

What i am after is some information about this gear box/drivetrain. Anything really from original gear ratios, how the locking system works, etc etc. I have seen 1 for an L series before little lone owned 1.

What i can say, all i seem to know is that i have NO talk steer and she goes great  lol

Any info/advice/direction/follow up would be greatly appreciated
Thanks Jaf.

I am going through the processes of putting this box in now Jaffa.

I have all the interior parts (switches, etc) and solenoids sorted for the new box. I am going to put a 1.592 low into it from a donor box as well. I'll PM you my MSN addy if you want to discuss it more :)

Have said box in my bus atm

Few subtle differences i found were that the bolt that holds the detend ball and spring just rested on the gb crossmember (MY) so out it the xmember comes again and gets the hammer treatment ,
and i am sure the whole gb is about 5mm longer, as i had to move the rear gear selector mount back and the custom tshaft is now a little tight for comfort

I also put the 1.592 low range and the 23 spline output shafts, much simpler gearbox to dismantle than the part time box as well.

I belive the gear ratios are the same as the RX ratios, never checked when it was apart

1 – 3.545
2 – 2.111
3 – 1.448
4 – 1.088
5 – 0.871
R – 3.416
D - 3.700

Got a cutawy of the rear section somewhere, might rustle it up at some stage.

So are these boxes an Auto rather than a manual box?

No this is a manual box. There is a Full Time 4EAT box though.

Thanks for the info.

Fang- It would be great to talk Fang as I would like to know more about it before throwing into my 4WD rig, only issue is that I do not have access to MSN atm so it will have to be via phone and/or email/PM’s – sorry.

My_STI – mine is in an RX and is (if I change it) going into an RX wagon so x member should not be an issue.

It would be good to reduce gears further however for now I do not this that it will happen. Thanks for the ratio’s though would this be 3.9 or 3.7 though? Can you tell this is not my strongest point

Couldn't you.. check the rear diff, it should match the front to find out the ratio of the box.

If the info is hard to find I would not worry about it for the moment.......if you want to put that gearbox in the wagon just make sure you swap the rear diff centres aswell. Of course you'd only do this is the sedan has a VLSD too :)
