dust them off if you would I'm up when the school holidays finish as i still need a real exhaust system and mine is in Perth waiting for me

Im going to bring the holley up in a box of its own as the weber is working, I just like tinkering with things people say won't work

and I put 20 litres of fuel in the other day and drove PJ like a race car (as much as I could within the speed limit) and did some AWD driving and still managed to get just over 200km from 20 litres

so now Im going to try the sedate grandpa approach and see if I can get more out of 20 litres

Hi Julian,
out of curiousity, what is the school year there? Here my son schools from september to june, usually their out the first or second week of june depending on how many days school was closed due to snow, power outages etc.

we have 4 semesters of approximately 10 weeks each, December to January is our biggest break nearly 2 months and the other 3 are 2 weeks

PJ decided not to start this morning well to be honest she did then she stalled and wouldn't start again it was .2 of a degree at 9 am here in sunny Bunbury could be the reason or I could have a fuel blockage (what Im thinking) carby kit is on the way so hopefully when thats in it will make a difference

hmmmm...... it isn't looking good, I have spark, fuel and everything is where it should be (or is it) PJ just won't start

horror of horrors how do I check the timing belt is in the right place without pulling out every bit of the front of the car.

I know I have to find TDC on number 1 that is the first rule of timing

but

can I remove the side covers on the timing cover and turn the crank manually to see if the marks on the pulleys are still in line?

do they match with TDC on the harmonic balancer?

or do I have to be able to see all of the cogs and pulleys?

Im not looking forward to Friday afternoon as thats the next time I have free to work on PJ

what would we do with our spare time if we all drove new Subarus. A compression test should give good indication should it not? That is a bugger it won't start. I guess you have already ruled out ECU, AFM, crank sensor, cam sensor, O2 sensor,injectors, fuel pressure....

bloody oath.. would work wonders if PJ still had fuel injection and a computer

but being carby with a dizzy, on ej22....not so easy to check those things

ahahha i find it hard to beleive the timing has moved again jules, but you know how these things work soemtimes :S

LOL ....funnny funny..... but with the absence of all of the gadgetry it is a simple diagnose

if you look back in this thread at about a week after I got PJ home I checked the timing and it was 10 degrees advanced even though it had been set at 13 degrees befor top dead centre before I left Perth.

now Ive discussed this with people at length one who is in Exmouth for another week and as well a small belt guide was left off the motor (my biggest mistake I believe) those of you who know about this 50 cent part know that it in theory stops the timing belt from jumping teeth under decellaration or under high revs with load or no load

well guess what unless the module is breaking down on crank which it isnt as I got a nice old shock when I tested the dizzy off the motor or there is no fuel at cranking it leaves me to the only thing left

yep the belt has moved more than 3 teeth

I would say it was a cold belt jump Frank has been running well but has had what I believe was a slight miss at idle it was .2 of a degree the other morning ( I believe it was way colder) when started and Frank was missing quite a bit (even with choke) and when I gave the engine a rev there was a miss that went away then as she warmed up the miss came back until she stalled then has not started again

tomorrow after work Im taking off the outer timing covers and checking the pulley timing marks at TDC (number 1 plug out and top of piston sighted) two complete engine revolutions will tell me what I don't want to know

and Albany is small, cold but a nice place to visit

start ya bastard is a good diagnostic tool too, if it starts or runs when using it then its a fuel issue unless its flooded!

I know Ive said it alot recently when it comes to my cheaper cars (ahahahahaaaah)

this morning my 92 liberty refused to start, the cold has killed the battery.

which lead me to try and start PJ who started but sounded like she was running on number 3 alone and refused to stay started

if the rain clears enough this afternoon I will attempt to find out where the timing is after that I will get the liberty to run:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

essentially same stuff as aerostart, some Diesel dude I won't mention reckons aerostart style stuff is hooked up to some hard to start diesels and nick named the yellow choke

yes another one of those geniuses who would blow his own hand off to prove he was right

well I fiddled and fiddled and Im sure my neighbours think Im a complete nut job as apposed to just a nutter and PJ refused to start plenty of fuel plenty of spark the timing is ok according to the old screwdriver in number one at TDC I reset the timing but still PJ refuses to start rain has delayed play again and funnily enough the liberty started first pop with PJs' battery so I have one running car and a mystery.

me is thinking the distributor is unhappy about something otherwise the timing is amiss

I had a flogged out bush in the dizzy and gave me similar issues, it was enough to upset the running of the car! And start Ya bastard is an improved version of aerostart that is available in most automotive retailers, Also our scrapers used to have an ether button for cold starting similar sort of stuff I imagine, although any that even had the canisters were empty!

Hello from the north end of WA.. where the weather is just perfect

Jules.. Couple of things come to mind. I know you're a fart smella and have probably already checked but here goes..

1) Check the piston is at TDC on compression and not exhaust stroke.
2) Check the rotation of the dizzy and the leads are in the correct firing order (1,3,2,4)
3) Check down the throttle with a torch and check for excess fuel in Plenum Chamber also checking that the fuel is present whilst you throttle the accelerator.

Lastly is compression but I really doubt that Frank has "jumped" a tooth as this really only happens on extreme cases and I've never seen it happen in any of our rally cars.

Ive checked all those things Ive still got to wait for the weather to clear to check the timing belt as every time I even think about pulling the side covers off it rains (it just started to rain WTF) the only other thing Ive not checked is the compression

and after hearing about the weather down there.. I might stay just a little bit longer (sounds like a beer commercial)

Well really hope you can check out those other things but I'd start looking at fuel. Let me know how it goes.
