Best M.Y wheel & tyre combo?

Post by TheInterceptor » Mon Nov 15, 2010 10:42 pm

Hey all, ive done a few searches but havent really gotten the info i need.
So here i am :) Thought id ask the guys in the know.

Whats the best wheel and tyre combo for offroad use on an 1983 M.Y soob?

A set of 13" wheels with fat rubber? (i gather from another thread that these sort of tyres are hard to come by?) Like 205/60+?

Or 14" wheels with somthing like 185/65?

Whats the maximum profile/width (on 13's if you can and 14's) that i can fit without rubbing? (im not going to cut any guards!) What do you reccomend?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

From my experience and from what I've read over the years without cutting and without lift you can have 185/70R14's. You could get a 205/60R13, which is around stock diameter. Not sure if they sell 205/65R13's...?

Big question is, what do you want out of your car? How will you use it? How much are you willing to spend? Without answers to these, you can't have answers to the question you asked. As it is all variable. There is no "perfect setup" for everyone.

Thanks for your reply, i just bought a set of sunraisers for $99 dollars off ebay. 205/60R13. They run great, no rubbing, no vibrations so far, they just fit within the guards, minimal amount of surface rust on one of the wheels. They're slightly larger than the stockies so i gained about 1cm or so of lift haha.

What i really want out of my car is the ability to go offroad without getting stuck over the smallest obstacle, to not fall into little ruts and the likes and get stuck, roll over obstacles easier, more grip off the black top and to have a larger contact patch. There might be more but having said that i wont be tackling anything real tough.
I would imagine these would be better than stock in any case.
Dont know how much my speedo is out at the moment but im pretty sure its not correct!

Anyways, will see how these go.

Cheers

Hey thanks, is it just me or is there no link?

Im guessing its that tyre calculator from miata.net? If it is well i had it saved in favorites.
Just found it in there haha.

So i plugged in the info and my speedo is .3kms slower at 100kmph assuming the speedo was correct in the first place. Have to grab dads phone and use its gps to really confirm its accuracy.

Cheers

We put a set of 185/80R13 on Gleno's can.. they work well on the sand and very quiet on the road. They were around the $90ea mark.

Old Subaru speedos are normally quite far out just with standard tyres.

By the sounds of it you won't need offroad tyres to do what you need. Just go out and see how the tyres you have go I reckon. Keeping gearing good and picking the right line offroad can actually be just as affective as running huge offroad tyres.

rsr555 thanks. My current tyres have 50% tread so if they're crap off road then ill find some wider tyres with the larger sidewall with more aggressive tread :)

Phizinza i just went out this arvo with the gps. Seems like my speedo was out by a bit before the tyre change. 50 is 50, 60 is 55, 70 is ~60 and from then on actual speed is basically 10kms less than speedo reading.

Tyres seem to absorb the bumps better but the steering is heavier and torque steer is more than it used to be. Will try to get the soob off road soon, theres not much of a choice round here.

Cheers guys
