EA82 & engine flush then dumped oil

Post by richard the fish » Tue Nov 30, 2010 8:07 pm

My EA82 had real loud lifters, the car had sat in the yard for about 6 months then when I started to drive it the lifter noise was so loud I almost had to wear ear plugs. So I changed the oil and filter bur ran 10w30 for some reason and added a can of Nulon lifter stuff, but not the off the shelf product but a can the guy at Auto One got from out back that said "For trade use only" On the can it says run for up to 1000km than change oil and filter. So after 600km the lifter noise had gone until the engine got up to running temp. I put this down to the light oil so changed the oil and filter, maybe the oil was to heavy 40w70. The guy at Auto one told me to run Nulon engine flush before I changed the oil and filter. The car went like a dream for about 100km then I started the car on the 3rd day and after about 1 min the oil light came on I stoped after about 2km and the dip stick was dry, when I started to pour new oil in it came out the bottom of the engine almost as fas as I could pour it in. Most of the leaking oil seems to be running down the frount of the sump just behind the timming belt cover.
Sorry about the long post, but any advice would be greatfully recived, my mecanic said prob just the frount seal swelled
Thanks:)

Sounds like either the front engine seal or oil pump O rings. Either way, you will have to go in and see what it is. Not a big job, just fiddly. Other guys on here will probably give you more on this but if you do a search on the forum, you will find a lot about EA82's and their noisy lash adjusters. Lots of guys have different remedies. I have just overhauled the front of mine with new timings belts, oil seals, pump seals etc. Choice of oil is also important as the problem can be addressed with the right viscosity oil. But you will need to address your leak first.

Sounds like a oil pressure related issue causing lifter noise. But the oil pressure problem is prob (as subybrumby said) the 1) oil pump o ring, or maybe the crankshaft main seal, but most likely to be oil pump related.

Pull out the rad, drive belts off, timing covers off and you will be able to see where its coming from.

If you had to take the timing belts off, read the service manual very carefully re putting the timing belts back on (better to replace them, aftermarket they are less than 30 each). Can be a real pain if you get things out of alignment. Though there is no threat of damage so give it a go.

Check the play in all the bearings of the water pump and belt pulleys too, replace any while your in there. Think you can get just new bearings but I have never done that yet.

Let us know how you go once resolved.

if you did an oil change did you check the old seal off the old oil filter came off as well? If you fit new filter and that seal stayed you get massive oil leak. Also oil pressure switch is a cheap fix for leaks in that area as well.
