ER27 (2.7ltr) never made it to Aus in factory delivered vehicles but there are a few around. Mostly imported and running in VWs. They are essentially an EA82 with 2 extra cylinders. Each cyl = 450cc
If you're asking the differences between the EA81 and the EA82.. main thing is the EA81 has 1 camshaft with pushrods and over head rockers where as the EA82 has 2 camshafts (one on each head) and timing belts to keep camshaft timing. Both engines are 1.8ltr and have the same bore and stroke.
Here's a good source of info..

Are they the same with some porting done at the factory? Or made from totally different castings??

Anything like these?

This is of an EA62 engine from the FF-1 Coupe, 1.3L and made 92HP and 7000rpm

EJ22 with dual IDF's and a different distributor setup (looks like its an electronic distributor with a remote coil pack)

Another EJ22 (well heads) with dual webbers

Gonna get you in a frenzy when we tell you that EA81 heads differed over the years, later having bigger valves. SCOOBIDOO also says he knows of three variants or generations of EA82 efi heads
Ea82 T blocks were essentially efi blocks that differed from carb with rear PCV vent that has a baffle cover plate screwed in behinbd flywheel, carby did not. Only turbo EA82 had the knock sensor I seen a few efi EA892 NA that not have it.
A kiwi fabricator / welder ...Dunbar was his name, once told me of the safari kit avail from Subaru in NZ the carbs were more directly over head ports

oh crap........
i know about the ea82 head bit
81 was a bit different, might leave that for a revision of the book, or until i can get my hands on every single generation of heads.
thanks for the block question wasnt sure if they had an extra bearing journal

ive heard they were on the possum bourne rally versions of the car

EA82 heads came in 3 GEN's
and are identifiable in the following was
GEN I - EA82 cast into the head with nothing else
GEN II - EA82 cast into the head and underlined
GEN III - EA82 cast into the head inside a box
so the GEN II were factory in later engines but the GEN III were only
available as replacement heads, never fitted as factory.
Only the EA82 engines with Knock control had the sensor though most had the
hole with no thread tapped to fit the sensor. And all with were turbo.
the EA82MPFI Turbo had a slightly longer block, coupled with different pistons to
reach the super low CR of 7.7 to 1
cheers,
Sam

Turbo blocks use lower compression pistons but the bare block appears the same.
I'm 100% sure of this in EA82Ts. I have never pulled my EA81Ts apart but I'm 99% sure they would be the same.
