putting a mpfi 82 to replace a tubo 82

Post by coupe » Wed Jan 19, 2011 9:55 pm

Hi Gang
Im in the middle of stripping and fixing a turbo ea 82 (1988 spider manifold) that has blown head gaskets.
If i wanted to replace the motor with a mpfi 82 (1989 normal manifold). is it achievable.
I assume i have to replace the exhaust, computer plumbing to airbox. Is there anything else.
Can i use the spider manifold.
Any information would be appreciated.
Cheers Pete

It will fit fine (all EA82 blocks are the same) but the MPFI has 9.5:1 compression pistons, the turbo model has 7.7:1 pistons, so you will have problems with detonation unless you run race fuel.
Current rides: 2016 Mitsubishi Triton GLS & 2004 Forester X
Ongoing Project/Toy: 1987 RX Turbo EA82T, Speeduino ECU, Coil-pack ignition, 440cc Injectors, KONI adjustale front struts, Hybrid L Series/ Liberty AWD 5sp
Past rides: 92 L series turbo converted wagon, 83 Leone GL Sedan, 2004 Liberty GT Sedan & 2001 Outback

was it twilightprotege that took the brave step of turboing his EA82 mpfi that actually came his way fitted with the turbo oil feed and drain. He got a good result when timing was set at 10 BTDC rather than 20 on non jet fuel I am sure. MPFI block also shares rear PCV vent on RHS block. ECU may need a touch to NA it, ground or insulate a pin ?

What dizzy you have on EA82T. May find if you not use it in application need coil to suit NA mpfi. I think if you have 4 plug ECU it is same or similar but 3 plug ECU is different specs internally

I have same sitting on shed floor to go in NA initially then add turbo gear - just when is a good question.

well
i stripped the heads off the turbo.
First thing i find is the previous owner has tried to put chemi weld or some type of sealant through the motor before he sold it to me, most of the cooling system is nearly completely blocked. this was a overheat waiting to happen.
The bores are screwed, they are pitted and rusted. The motor got hot enough to actually miss shape the cam belt boxes they are all slightly melted.
So its put in the mpfi motor and out with the turbo.
I will have to see if the spider manifold will match up or its a standard mpfi for me lol.

Set of 4 EA82T pistons.
Lightly used but in very good condition. Bought them off this forum a couple of
years ago but I never used them. Previous owner used them in a engine build,
but I believe they were only run for a couple 1000km's.

:)

sign of an EA82T those melted camboxes :) Can you check the function of the sender unit on new engine before you take it out too far from home. Turns out why the engine in mine cooked to such state before I bought my 4GLTA from the wreckers . Mine worked from cold to quarter and went no further up the scale despite the donk getting hotter on my watchdog. Spare sender fixed it. The spider manifold should fit to heads as they are same casting. Interesting spider NA mpfi.

We assembled a 88 mpfi motor to fit the vortex. at the moment it is a normal manifold not the
spider. i broke the knock sensor so the spider will wait while i have a play with sorting out the
mpfi.
Its running on 3 cyls and reving to 1000 rpm.
So far so good lol.
A special mention goes to my 13 nearly 14 year old son who has manned up and done most of the crappy work that you would get the apprentice to do.

Good results thus far. I have a knock sensor if needed.

coupla different knock sensors in these babies. So far seen green plastic, white plastic, one pin or two pins.
