Cheap, homemade exhaust to make my '90 Subi Brumby a tad louder?

Hi, I am wondering how to make my Subi Brumby roar a bit louder with a new exhaust setup, which doesnt affect the performance (unless it gives it a bit more power, which would be even better) of my vehicle, but is homemade and not too expensive? My car has just had the carby and head gasket done, (power had been an issue since I got it 2 months ago, thought it was just the 300,000 k's, until the head gasket gave out, mech pulled the beast apart, carby was stuffed too. Anyhow... Where were we...) and hopefully when I get it back it should run alot better than previous, the only thing I would like to do is make it roar like the true beast it is

So, anyhoo, any ideas anyone? Cheap, homemade, and loud? Do-able?

Jam a broom stick in the tail pipe to knock out the baffles in the muffler. Worked a treat for my old mates RWD corolla

baffles is pretty easy, other thing we used to do was salt water on the muffler and then smash it when in rusted

from memory youve got the y pipe that comes down from the engine then it connects into the tail pipe, maybe if youve got a mate thats a welder could make you y pipes with a bit larger airflow - however sometimes this can be detrimental to performance

go to 2 inch with a cat (empty) then a straight pipe to the end with a V8 commodore hotdog it will be as noisy as a sopwith camel and will have no power gain what so ever

but it will be noisy

I think the L series Y pipe is slightly larger than the MY units too - might be something worth looking into...

Replace the rear resonator with a hotdog, and put it on backwards. Gives you that lovely Cessna tone.
Or just hammer a section of pipe through the existing resonator. Works well.
One other method: big subwoofer mounted under tray, enormous amp and a cd of a V8 supercar.

Very quiet for awhile and then the smell of wood burning if you leave it in.
If you take it out after knocking the baffles around, well it sounds like a loud fart.

Hey Guys,
Can any of you comment on the following,
One of the guys here has found an outfit here in the UK who will do a full stainless exhaust system (copy of original as I understand) but in 2.25" stainless steel. Fitted for £250 - which here is good.
Has anyone out there done a brumby (with EA81) exhaust in 2.25" pipe ?
Has anyone got any thoughts on back pressure? (is 2.25 too big ?)
Are there any other considerations that can be advised for this set up?
ie bigger at the front 2.25 and a reduction at the rear maybe 2.00 ??

My friend has had one fitted today and is currently running a std Hitachi carb. But he is planning a Weber (like mine which is c/w sports air filter).

He reports that the engine revs free'er and seems to have a little more power plus there is a nice sound track to listen to !

I am interested in following him with a S/S system but would like to learn if there is a tried and tested method to the build.

Comments please ?

Hi Giles,
well as you know exhaust tuning and fabrication is a science touched with a bit of hit and miss testing and tears.
However Scamp has a standard system with the cat and standard muffler and Scary has a 2.25 or 2.5 system with no cat and a hotdog muffler(resonator) and he does appear to pull a little better once the revs are over 2 grand but under that a bit doughy.
they both have the standard Hitachi carby for their respective models

To compare Giles - my EJ22 has a 2.25 inch exhaust system and it goes well with it over the stock L series exhaust that I fitted after the cat (when I just got it going).

I think the 2.25 would be overkill for an EA81. You would have seen the size of the stock exhaust from an EA81 from your little brumby - they're tiny! Kind of like the early mini's pencil exhaust... I've heard of good setups using the 2 inch pipe. Ask Phizinza about his setup as I'm pretty sure he's tried a few things on various MY powered EA81s and would be able to share some knowledge on how they went.

The problem is if you go too big you lose some back pressure - apparently this is important in the low revs and I think when you start your subi too.

Is this exhaust from the cat to tip or the head to tip?

The other thing you'll find is that if you made an identical setup from mild steel you will get a different note in the exhaust due to the different materials used! This is something I've heard from others along my way in life...

All the best with it. I know how nerve racking it is when you sent your beloved subi in for a better note upon their return!

Yeah I agree with the 2 inch setup and a resonator and perhaps a small megaphone after just to create some turbulance maybe something similar to a Dunstall

Well the larger one on Scary sounds good and when you get up over 4 grand
it sounds better (boy racer) but not unbearable
