Higher Rev than usual. and clutch
Hi All..
I'm finding a few issues at the moment with the impreza. of late I have had a feeling my clutch is stuffed again. What's the warranty with these done via Clutch specialist usually?
but since I've had this feeling, I've noticed that my engine seems to be reving a lot higher, by about 400 - 500 revs. Generally sits at about 500rpm when idling but now it's sits anywhere between 900 - 1000 rpm. I haven't noticed a change when it sits in 1st or Neutral. I don't notice it reving much higher when accelerating (as to say the clutch is slipping) The only bit of work I have done on the vehicle is flushed out the coolant, and resealed the thermostat gasket end.
My mum commented on it the other day when I rocked up that it seemed a lot louder than usually. I don't think there is a cylinder mis-firing, but something makes a little bit of a clinking sound when reving,
It's oil'd up with iridium Sparkies <20,000k old.
Any idea's guys?

if you have an aftermarket pod filter that can be washed and oiled, it is a fair bet your AFM is dirty (covered in the pod oil) and giving a false reading.
and yes blue smoke = oil, black smoke = too much fuel, grey smoke = find new engine.
Normally blue smoke means oil is getting into the pistons, either via worn valve stem seals in the heads or the rings and the pistons are worn.

NO Aftermarket POD. using standard EJ20 Airbox. Best way of cleaning AFM? Electrical Cleaner??
Easy pocess to replace the Valve Stem seals? and if the Pistons are worn I assume an engine rebuild? Yeah?
If only happens when i start the car. It never happens if I accelerate or rev the engine. Hence why I'm thinking flooded, like a lawn mower. (Leave the Fuel line open, start it up and it's just smoking for a minute or so until it burns the fuel)

KJO, oupla things, before u get started.
the oil in combustion chamber at startup is as others have said, stem seals or rings/pistons or both.
as the boxer engine/s rocker covers fill UP with oil (towards the side of the cover), usually a heat worn stem seal will take a bit of time to actually start getting sufficient oil. not sure on the exact time. the stem seals actually need oil to operate as the oil not only lubricates the seal, it also juices up the rubber, (yes in the same manner that those instant stop smoke products juice up the seal). Now this time it takes to fill up, also means more time for oil to get to the (faulty) stem seal and into ur engine. If u startup and the smoke doesn't appear for, i think its roughly 5 or 6 seconds, suspect stem seals!
Thank you subaru for using an engine which allows easy diagnosis of oil consumption issues!
So try to rule out seals by adding some stop smoke and see if the amount of smoke reduces over the coming days. (if stem seals are the problem, ull probably see more smoke at the first drive of the day and not so much again until the engine has rested for about 12 hours.) IF it does die down, ur stem seals are probabyl the issue.
Most other cars (top cylinder heads) are very different, dont ask any everyday mechanic for advice coz subarus are not everyday engines)
If it makes absolutely no difference, rest assured its your rings
Worn piston rings in a Subaru will also have similar symptoms to the classic smoke on startup, as oil pools on the side of the cylinder walls and seeps through the rings (especially end gaps) ready to be burnt on startup, but u usually see this instantly at startup. (within 2 seconds)
im hoping its the seals.
cheers
