petrol gauges why 2?
petrol gauges why 2?
I have a liberty wagon '91 and the petrol gauge isn't working, so asked my mechanic to fix it. He said there were 2! One on the left and one on the right! One costs $200 and the other one $300 odd. I am confused. Why are there two, what do each do and how do you know which one isn't working? Any info in non-tech terms where poss please cos I'm not that way inclined, or if there is a website I can look at.

its usually the main one , you have a "saddle bag" tank so there are two to give "true" reading
lucky for you the main one is the 200 dollar one
which is drivers side btw
cheers

I'm 99% sure the second one (passenger side) is for the low fuel light, it usually comes on at exactly 9L whereas your main gauge can read whatever it wants and usually does.
Replace the one on the drivers side with a second hand one or try cleaning the contacts in thinners or with some contact spray, I wouldn't bother with a new one.

The sensors are wired in series and measure an average of the levels of fuel in the 2 sides of the tank.
Fuel light has its own sensor (wrongly labelled 'thermistor')

Low fuel light is on drivers side.
Sandpapering or cleaning the contacts works 50% of the time, doesnt last long.
Ive put up with it for 5 years on ODO km reading - never the fuel gauge as it always shows 1/2 full or less.
Cheers
