Hi Guys..

Got a new toy, 89 brumby.. But it has issues..

Engine starts and idles fine, can sit there for 20 minutes, can even give it a rev, still idles fine..

BUT, this is the weird bit, once i drive it, in the first couple hundred meters, it gets a major dead spot at the beginning of putting the throttle down, almost like it drops a cylinder, then runs like a pig until i turn it of and let it sit for an hour or so..

So far i have Changed the Plugs, Leads, Coil, Carby, Fuel filters, adjusted the Timing Tappets on right bank (looking into bay), as it seamed like it was no. 1cylinder and checked for Vacume leaks abot 10 times..

I have no idea, anyone hed this before and fixed it?

Been told it may be dizzy module on elec dizzy?

you need to do the clearances on all valves it makes the whole shebang run way smoother.

it could be electrical related to spark it could be electrical related to fuel.

it could even be a blockage in the fuel line between the filters

normally the dizzy module either works or it doesn't but look for cracks in the wiring where it enters the dizzy.

check the dizzy for excessive play the bushes holding the shaft could be causing the reluctor to bash against the stator in the dizzy

when you turn the ignition on does the fuel pump prime then stop?

there is a relay behind the passenger set on the cab wall a bugger to get to but this could be the problem it stops the fuel from pumping if it doesn't receive a signal from the dizzy/coil saying the engine is turning.

the "new" carby was it from another brumby of the same age or a wagon/sedan

check the idle solenoid on the carby make sure it opens and stays open once again small cracks in the plastic will cause it to short out making it open and close

can you start it cold and drive straight away without your 20 min warm up , and it be fine ?
Brumbys have two fuel filters, one up front, one down under near tank on...LHS near fuel pump. Different part numbers too

Ok.. Yer the "New" carby, is a used one i got with the ute, guy i bought the ute off threw it in, it was off his car and said it was working fine he just went for a weber conversion, it's off a brumby, about the same model, was exactly the same in every way, problem stayed the same after i changed it, also changed a few vacume parts over he gave me to see if it was any of those, so much vacume crap on these motors compared to my old wagon i had..

I changed both filters in on it, i'm going to pull the pump off tomorrow and give it a look to see if anything is blocking it.. it doesn't look original and it primes when it turn ignition on.

It does feel like a fuel problem the miss is not sharp enough to feel elecrical, kinda bogs down. yer i've tried to drive cold but still does it..

The problem seams to kick in went the engine starts to load up.

the fuel plunger in the hitachi carby is prone to being a piece of fecal matter, especially if the carby has never been re kitted, it could be that it needs a kit put through it.

or replacing with a weber that works :) (expensive but worth the hassle)

Well got it sorted, took about 10 minutes and that was including trip to parts shop, i popped the dizzy cap off again, got it into some good light and found a small hairline crack right on No.1 plug.

Now runs smooth as silk, feel a bit stupid i didn't spot it the first time i looked, after working on cars for ever, but at least now i have replaced all the old bits and cleaned everything, so now it just needs an oil change and it's had a full service top to bottom..

Now the fun starts, Lift kit, big wheels and custom paint and interior, my favourite parts of new toys.. :-)
