95 Gen2 lib gearbox noise.

Post by El_Freddo » Mon Apr 11, 2011 6:31 pm

G'day all

I'm all for noises at the moment! Today we picked up a 95 liberty for a mate - ebay special: blown head gasket and a reconditioned gearbox. The subi is pretty clean and we're super happy with it so far except for the gearbox.

After getting it started - flat battery, we found a hole in the top radiator hose. Got a new one sorted, topped up the coolant and took it for a spin. No temp issues :D And a spark plug that shorts under load. We suspect that there's no issues with the head gaskets.

On the drive it makes a clicking/grinding noise in 1st ONLY. Any other gear at any speed, even the slow stuff its not there. In 1st its there under load, no load, high revs and low revs. We don't know what it is but it is definitely something with 1st gear.

We're planning on pulling the gearbox out then apart to have a look at what it might be. If we can't find anything here we're going to get another one from PAP and drop that in. Fingers crossed the replacement box doesn't have anything wrong with it!

If anyone can shed some light on this I'll be happy to hear about it!

Cheers

Bennie

clicking gearbox

Post by spambo » Mon Apr 11, 2011 6:54 pm

In the past a have worked on gearboxes such as the old holden aussie 4 speed where a clicking sound usually meant a chipped or broken gear (maybe only half a tooth) but the noise is very audible
just a guess but the only real way to know is a gearbox ortopsy........

^ Winner!

Got the engine and box out this morning, before that we drained the gearbox oil plus the metal shavings and chunk that was part of a gearset some where. The official ortopsy revealed the upper gearset cog of the 1st gear was almost missing a whole tooth. Unfortunately I left the camera in my mates shed so no pics of todays findings :( And probably none tomorrow as we'll be down at Holgates for some soft drinks ;) ;)

Cheers

hahaha.. soft drinks I'm sure

I'm glad to see you found the problem but I'm sure you're a little concerned (like I am) that the previous owner told you it was a recond box?? Now you'll have 2 boxes to build
You know you are getting old when the candles on your birthday cake start to cost more than the cake itself.

Not worried about this gearbox build as its pretty much as straight swap, so I'm not stressed about preload etc. The other box however needs parts machined (crown wheel and hi/low selector fork) plus all the preload and lash adjustments not to mention the change of bearings. I've got one of Gee's mates in mind for the job as I'll have nil space at hotham to play with projects :(

And on the bearing note (from your build thread) FROG's onto the gearbox code so hopefully that will give us some details :D

So here are the pics I missed out on posting last night:

Busted small 1st gear cog:

Swapping the pinion shaft from the original lower gearset to the undamaged gearset - went easier than expected :D

And the subi in question:

Now just waiting on parts to arrive for the engine as the gearbox is back in one piece. Hopefully this subi will be back on all 4 and moving by next wednesday ready for a road worthy.

Give him a break VV!!

The subi is now back on one piece, sporting some new rims (pics later) and goes very well. I'm very happy with the way its come together!

Yesterday the engine and gearbox were as they are in the last pic, today we drove the subi out of the shed for a successful test run! We got it back together while still working and waiting on parts... So it is ready for its roadworthy test tomorrow :D

Think i'll post all the pics and explanation up in the restorations section.

STOKED!!

Cheers
