SHELL DIESEL EXTRA any body use this before?

Post by MY11OBD » Wed May 18, 2011 7:32 am

Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone has used Shell Diesel Extra? I just noticed filling up this morning for the first time there was Extra at the end of Shell Diesel labeled at the pump.

Doing a quick google reveals this is a fuel for mining and transport industry?

Do you think there is any harm / good?

The pump I regularly use, so there is no more normal diesel pumps at this station. Do you think Shell are moving to this newer type of diesel?

I drive a MY11 Outback Diesel.

Any help and discussion on this topic welcomed.

We have had 2 types of diesel in the UK for sometime now.
About 10p differance per litre between them.
The higher priced versions have additives to improve performance and engine cleaning. I have also noticed economy improvments too (marginal)

Maybe clever marketing to gain 50p extra per gallon !

Further research has revealled Diesel extra could help out to reduce the particulate matter lessening the impact of blockages in the dpf filter?? only time will tell but it certainly drives smoother and responsive so far...

Shell Diesel Extras

Post by NickL » Mon May 23, 2011 9:41 am

Hi, Nick from Shell Australia here. Thanks for your interest in Shell Diesel Extra...I think I can answer some of your questions.

You’ll start seeing Shell Diesel Extra fuel appear at Shell and Coles Express outlets around the country. It will mainly be available through larger Road Transport sites and independent Shell dealer sites. Shell Diesel Extra has been designed to get extra kilometres out of you tank compared to regular diesel and also contains an enhanced detergent, which helps prevent the build-up of corrosion and deposits in your engine. It also helps to protect fuel pumps and engine components.

You’re right about us targeting the Mining and Transport industry with this fuel – we are. So while the formulation has been designed for heavy duty diesel engines, there is no problem with using this fuel in your Subi and you may notice better fuel efficiency over time.

I hope that answered some of your questions,
Nick.

That's good that Shell now offer it. Recently I've only been filling up with Caltex's Vortex diesel as Shell didn't have a 'premium' diesel.

I'll give the Shell one a go too.

I've had better economy out of the two tanks I've tried of Vortex - although the car is still running in so that may skew the figures too.

My L/100 for each last few tanks has been (and calculated at the pump, not the onboard computer) 6.67, 6.65, 6.50, 6.36, 6.3 (Vortex) and 5.99 (Vortex) - all the same driving style and route.

My current tank is on Shell normal diesel to see if it really makes a difference. Currently 1/2 a tank looks to be around 6.4, so yeah it may be helping. I've done a total of around 7000km so far.

Thanks Shell, I'll give it a go.

Nathan.

Hi Suparoo, I joined to answer the question because i'd prefer to have the right info available for people. Hope thats ok, there are a lot of 'myths' posted to forums in my presonal experience so thought I'd just try to get the correct info out there.

I am a car 'nut' but like older cars and historic race cars. I recently sold an historic formula ford I was racing, and a 1967 Elfin sportcar...race cars are a good way to churn cash! My current ride is a VW (yawn) and I have an old muscle car I am restoring. Cheers
