Anyone else work nights?

G'day all

When we headed up to Hotham this year it was for a day job. I've since quit that and found something that's a lot better for the bank account - but it involves working nights. So far this weekend has been uber quiet which makes my job easy. Once the masses flock here that will change.

So I'm wondering who else is a night worker? And what do you do to fill those boring moments?

I think I need to look up that virtual bubble wrap website to keep me entertained during the quiet periods. I've already nailed a movie tonight and have lots of time for the internet at the moment too.

I did a long time ago Bennie, when I worked in the hotel industry. but I missed being able to go to the beach or anything else that was done during the day.

I was going to sleep at around 6 am and getting up a 4 in the afternoon, just in time to catch the sunset.

The worst part of the industry is the drug and alcohol fuelled violence, which I found at its worst around 2-3 am.

And yeah the quiet times would have us doing all sorts of things like 5 point dares or "inventing" new drinks which when combined proved near fatal, damn hilarious or both.

I did, not so long ago, like eight hours ago was my last shift. I found it different to Jules, could still rise by 9am 5 out of seven mornings, play and be at work by 3pm. Now, i am prepared to tick that box - willing to work shifts - that I once would never - only if the money is right.

Im a shift worker. 2 x 12 hour days followed by 2 x 12 hour nights. I operate dozers, front end loaders, skid steers, gantry unloaders. So im ammused most the night. Gets boring sometimes especially when there is a caustic ship in. By law I can't leave the wharf and the internet is really strict and most sites don't work.

I've worked shifts my whole life - 30 odd years of it - absolutely hate it and don't know why I still do it.

hahaha not really - I love it and can't stand working 9-5. No traffic, plenty of time to go the shops, plenty of time to work on cars.

I work 12hrs in a combination of 2days/2nights, 3days/2nights and 2days/3nights. So I get a 4 day and 2 5 day breaks every 4 weeks and then every 12 weeks I get 2 rostered days off, take 2 days annual leave and get 2 weeks off

If it wasn't for the 22% shift loading for doing all that my pay would suck big time though.

Generally in bed asleep by 6:30am and up just after lunchtime. Although if something important is happening I can get by with less sleep - a few weeks ago I worked Fri-Sun night and got by on 4 hours sleep.

Although my job is piss easy - spend most of it (and most of my money) on the internet or reading car mags. On a night shift all I do is go for a 20 minute drive once every 3 or 4 hours. Day shift is almost the same but have to open/close a gate, search cars and peoples bags a couple of times a day and thats about it

It does get really boring on days when the boss is around and we can't read or play on the net quite so much - then I just go for more drives and crank Triple J up.

This is what hospitality used to be - until the ripped out overtime/public holiday loadings - it pisses me off. We got burnt by that last "summer".

And we don't get the J's so well up here. Our TV reception is pretty much all northern austraila. There's a competition on with a community centre/cinema in Alice Springs at the moment! The closest TV we get is albury which is about a 2 and a bit hour drive from Hotham...

Tonight is looking very quiet being a sunday and all.

Hahaha... Not quite steptoe! I'm not security - that's what the police are for! And if they're called the "guest" will more than likely be black listed from the entire mountain's accommodation! Not a lot of people realise this.

I don't get calls like that at 1.30am. Usually just the ones where they're complaining about noise as punters return from the nightlife venues... It can feel pretty hairy with 50 drunk people in the corridors when they decide its one to fifty. That's when I wake the hotel manager - not my favourite job! I've had to do that once, hopefully it will stay that way for some time!
