The brakes make a big difference. Both the L series and the Liberty didn't fill me fill confidence when it came to braking. Now i'm really happy with how it stops and i'm not so concerned about the bigger tyres.

Put a H6 in your Gen1! These motors get a bad rap because they're mated to pathetic auto from factory, but no shit they pull your hair back with a manual box. Even without a low range this car rarely stops and stalls even on tough ascents when off-roading.

I would like some 15" rims and a chunky set of muddies but they won't fit over the 4 pot front callipers.

I did a tour of the pick-a-parts in melbourne yesterday looking for a new radio surround. Out of 3 wreckers i only found 1 Gen2 wagon and it had a cargo blind, fitting kit for a cargo barrier (dual position kit), a complete set of mud flaps, new cup holders and a black dual range knob (I had a grey one) and the whole lot only cost me $35!!!! Couldn't believe it. I already had a milford cargo barrier fitting kit on order from Opposite Lock and it was going to set me back $160. Very happy with that little find.

By mud flaps you mean the moulding that fits around the body?

Only because my box doesn't have the low range lever setup the same as yours - I thought I had a single range hence the pants situation - I paid quite a bit for that box and I'll be SPEWING if it's a single range...

So I dug through my images as I know I've got a couple of recent pics of the box as I was trying to work something out. Here's the one that shows why I was worried - I started to question if I knew the difference between the PT Single range 4wd and the AWD with locking centre:

^ You can clearly see the centre diff in here :D and this makes me happy.

Now just to get it into another set of casings, replace bearings (having second thoughts on this due to price, time and not knowing if it's really needed - but also want it done properly the first time), change diff ratio, shove in L series good low range and get it in Ruby Scoo...

I am seriously thinking about a WRX 4EAT with VTD. I want the slowest crawl speed possible and a strong reliable gearbox. A tricked out custom manual box would be awesome, but if it ****s up then i am up the proverbial to replace it. Its basically a one off, if it self destructs i could be up for 4 gearboxes to create another one. Or i replace it with a stock manual gearbox and wish i'd just gone with an auto in the first place.

The H6 is a more powerfull motor than a dual range was designed for. But the WRX 4EAT is factory built for more power than my engine is ever going to have, or it will be up to the task if i add a supercharger to my motor further down the track. Supercharged H6 with a custom 5MT dual range? Surely a disaster waiting to happen.

WRX 4.11 auto box mid section and VTD rear end
Turbo Legacy 4.44 front diff housing
Gen2 outback speedo gears
WRX or TT legacy TCU to drive it depening on your TPS polarity.

Go for a drive in a H6 auto first though. I am not a fan. They make their power up high and the auto box makes them feel sluggish.

It would be awesome offroad though.

Thanks for the input. That combo you've mentioned though is another franken box and the thought of that really puts me off. Not as much as a franken 5MT but I would still need to gather more parts and have it built :???: Fkn annoying. I want to get something in the car to start kicking ass at low speed in the next 4-6 weeks.

I know what you mean about H6 auto's been gutless at low RPM and that makes me reluctant too. Every complaint i hear about the H6 comes down to the auto. The last thing i want is to lose my bottom end torque, which i have in spades at the moment with my STI driveline. I am hoping that a stock WRX auto is a different beast.

I'm also not sure about the H6 TCU and wether or not a turbo TCU is a direct/easy replacement or not. I'm not even sure my car still has the TCU, although i'm assuming it does to run the ECU. It could be a nightmare to get the auto running wiring wise so that is also going to determine things to a large extent.

Another option is to get rid of the lift and outback suspension and buy a lift for the MY wagon i'm driving at the moment. I could even put the CLSD and OBX helical LSD into the FT4WD box i have and put that in the MY. I don't think you can get much more simple and reliable than an EA81. Hmm then what about the inner CV joints, probably needs custom driveshafts.

Too many cars, options and parts is starting to annoy me :???: Less is more, more is less?:mad:

And there goes the one thing that makes your H6 stand out from the crowd!

Why not give the tricked out manual dual range box a go - it's going pretty good for the H6 foz without a problem. And I reckon you know how to look after it unlike others around the place if that's what your worried about - I think this is also part of the reason why you selected this unique subi as well.

If the tricked out manual dies then maybe look at doing the MY as the offroader and drop the H6 back on its guts with the current 'box and give the WRX's a run for their money :twisted:

Going down the MY route wouldn't be a bad thing - Subaruby's goes pretty well for what is essentially a stock drive train. As for the FT4wd box being dropped in, if you were to split it to put the good low range in you'd also swap the diff output stubs to the same as the MY - stock drive shafts this way ;)

I'd love to see you do the dual range gearbox with the H6 - it would really unleash the potential of the offroad in the H6 lib and would be an awesome offroad weapon!
