Getting deeper here too on the comparison stuff - thanks for the link.

On SubaruXT forum found this staring at me suggesting the adjustable aftermarket stuff, likely non compliant for those inspectors, but sounds tempting to research further too, paint it black matte underneath :)

OKey, dokey. We have a member who has some MX5 (Miata) shocks and Honda springs sittin' around for the next person to try on L RX Sedans, I think.

Picture does say a thousand words or so , thanks TOONGS

Did someone say $900 ?

Sometimes you need to think a bit about what the good peoples at USMB do to their cars .

Its really not workable just to mount the top of the strut solidly to the body mount . Ls have little short rear legs , ok semi trailing arms , meaning they scribe a small radius arc as they rise and fall . As they do this the bottoms of the the struts get pushed inwards and outwards and if theres no give at the top then the shock rod has to flex . It it sheared off and below the upper spring seat then the whole strut collapses and the car body drops onto the wheel - nasty .
No short of having the rod tops modified , cut and Subaru like sections welded on , you'd need to run screw on spherical joints and make up a cross pin top/body mounts . More trouble than I wanted to go to .

A .

Yeah, no top bushing sounds like the emergency repair - like the one seen on Outback or Bush Mechanics on ABC TV a few years back. Think it was a bit of springy Acacia branch or trunk that was fashioned into a rear leaf spring on an old Falcon to get it mobile again :)

Sammynb also says " did you know 2005 Liberty rear units will fit?"

Right, got an email from Kevin to say any info from ten years ago on spring reset to suit one job would no longer be known. It is pretty impressive that the fella that started a company such as Kmac 47 years ago ,still answers the phone on Saturdays and replies to emails

Head says to use the shortest that were KYB out of my old Touring Wagon 87. Add the better feeling springs that came with the monroe wylies in my sedan and flip, rotate the top mount with hole drilled just above and into the boot space to fit the top bits.OK I hear some starting to scream std FWD Vortex coils and struts will sort my problem. Had bum steers before with stuff (not in here mnd you) I just needs ome specs, facts etc before buy bits.

Update the saga is 4WD Vortex has had a pretty shtouse col conversion as far as the rear is concerned. Front measures excellent according to RTA specs with the Royale FWD L Sedan or FWD Vortex struts set up. I don't know which car donated just an EA82 FI FWD.

I have ripped out my Monroe Wylie shocks from my what was an air bagged L Sedan 4WD to try in the Vortex. Also have two sets of rear L struts and springs that have both been in the back of Cheap Grief with a plus 40mm and plus 50mm increase in height measured at rear bumper middle. I now measure from ground to top of wheel arch or wheel centre to wheel arch. I now find reason the plus 50 has 10mm over the other set is the base of spring support is about 10 mm more than the other. Of four rear sets I have three different measures from very bottom of shock to bottom spring base with about 25mm variance.

So achieve a 25mm with shock, 35mm on the inverted mount - chasing a drop of 60mm in excess of fitted stance. Whether 60mm difference in strut off car equals same I dunno, will soon see.

My big worry here can be that simply lowering ride height does not change the fact that the daggy bouncy tall spring of the choices available is still in the teetering above its usual top position if I use them- if i use my springs pinched from sedan may change all that but will still want them back. Still have no idea what they came out of to convert air bag sedan to coils
