How to fix this leak

Post by LIFTED » Sun Aug 21, 2011 4:24 pm

Hi
I've been smelling exhaust fumes in my new car and after looking around I have found a leak at a connection just in front of the cat, see pic.
Can some one tell me how I can fix this please, such as what parts do I need or can I just tighten up those bolts at the join?

there is a flange gasket that goes in the flexible joint, you can try tightening up the bolts but I would think that they should be at their tightest.

the gasket looks like this

is this the liberty or the outback?

$30 or so for L and MY ones I think. Soak CRC556 on the threads before undoing, CRC burns off making scary smoke too - let it burn off while you sit out in fresh air.

Or pull it to investigate, silicone may help to seal things better

Wow, I wouldn't have thought it was a $30 replacement! Genuine subaru unit I suspect?!

All sorted now? These will last ages if the springs on the joint hold up, which they usually do. I have had a bolt snap from age - heating and cooling accelerated the rusting! Then I knocked it offroad and I think this did it in :???:

Cheers
