I revved the engine with the air filter off. as soon as the second throat wanted to come in there was a rush of fuel far in excess I'd imagine than what is required. any ideas how to fix this on the 32/36 weber?

I had a similar problem with my 32/36 on the 2.2 EJ, I solved the problem by changing my main jets to a 130 main and a 135 secondary.

You could probably go to a 125 main and a 130 secondary to solve the problem

Here's the jet details i got from Recarb in QLD.

The jet list for the '83 Subaru wagon is:
Primary: main 135, air 160, emulsion - F50 for good engines - F66 for older engines, idle 55, pump 50
Secondary: main 140, air 160, emulsion F66, step-up 50

mmmm thanks again.

I rang Weber parts service in Melbourne today and the guy went through the jet sizes.

He told me that for this engine the sizes are about right.

Anyway I inspected the carby float level. bottom of floats to bottom of top cover....low level was 50mm- as per spec. high level was 30mm when it should be 40mm. big difference. Readjusted that and put it together. Ran better in that (when secondary came in) it spluttered and then revved well but only died when full quick throttle given. progress.

My gut feeling is as above- that the secondary jet is too large.

I'll order a few. think we are on the right track here.

another update.

based on you two guys input I ordered the following jets.

main 120, 125, 130 (already have 135 and 140)

air 170 (already have 160 and 160 the unreadable one was 160...my wifes eyes are good)

I ordered the 170 (air, for secondary) based on the rep's advice as he told me the air size often makes a difference if it runs rich.

anyway they were only $7 each.

The idle 50's should be ok.

sounds good remember that the carby was jetted for an engine that was to pull a few more kilos that what the bike weighs.

I would try the 125 main and 135 seconday (main) and see how it runs and the 170 air secondary is what I have on my carby.

what about the accelerator pump diafragem - aren't they wildly different from min to max? You may only need a mild squirter. Don't listen to me, only owned one, never fitted it, onsold it to a dude who reckoned it was stuffed and forgot to pay the balance, so not even sure if they have acc pumps , think they are like Holleys.

yeh Toonga- think you are on the money. will see tomorrow how it goes. all up the trike weighs about 550kgms but I tow often 450kgms. But will try your recommendations first..

Steptoe the accelerator pump isnt adjustable. I think thats what I've already looked at. a lever underneath. I know more about mangoes than carbies

My Brumby has an EA81 in it, and supposedly weighs 900KG. Plus whatever is in the tray. I dont know what it is rated to.

Brumby Kid. Steptoe posted just after you did if you look at the time posted. he was refering to a previous post on accelerator pump/lever.

Today is the day for some jet swapping.

BK, no not directed at your question, sorry.

I think the Gross Vehicle Mass for Brumby is on your compliance plate under the bonnet - 1620kg.

The previous owner interpreted that as you can legally tow a horse float with the Brumby. We did not discuss with , or without the horse.
I have had 800kg on the tray, spilling over onto the roof. I think it is the cause of buggered suspension bits at the rear, the cross piece at the top of the shocks is also bowed a little each side. Towing and load on tray is also different. I reckon no more than 400kg on the tray......

Today what could go wrong did go wrong. Water leaks. a pin hole in the steel tube under the manifold to the heater hose was the first. Then a drain plug leak. I went for a short ride....the water temp gauge ran up to 100 so quick. It was clear to me I had an air lock in the cooling system. Got it home and took advice from a friend to drill a one eighth hole in the top of the thermostat to allow air to find its way out when filling. Seemed to work well. once up to operating temp it was fine, as it was last week. anyway we all have problems.

Tried for two hours with the jets.

ended up with 130 primary, 160 air secondary main 135 air 170 idles remain at 50 as the 45 and 55 made no change.

but it still ran like crap.

Then finally....why is this small tube loose? vacuum tube from dizzy was disconnected. at the same time I had a wire connector lose from the dizzy to the loom. so in reality I dont know what cause the second throat to bog down but I fixed it.

Revved Tweety up and YES!!! that second throat came in and wow!. Took it for a ride. Went great. I can feel it is about 90% running ok. Certainly different to the VW...seems smoother, more kick in the back feel. The auto trans kick down doesnt kick down like it should. too much or not enough vacuum. as the tacho reads low I dont know how hard it is revving so was conservative. the amount of vacuum was certainly at least what I had from the VW engine. anyway that's a small adjustment that I'll worry about later. it relies on an electrical switch I set up under the accelerator pump and a vac solonoid on the trans.will start her up again tomorrow, go for a ride around town and park put her to bed until Monday week for the exhaust.

then a video?

You talk crazy :p

VW engines spin clockwise too, otherwise your transmission would now have multiple reverse and only one forward gear lol.

Not many engines spin anti-clockwise, just some Hondas and the old Corvair motors.
