Which sounds like the best tyre?

I'm a fan of Maxxis tyres. I'd say go with them. Cheap, long lastings and tough (from the ones I've seen and used).

So I've narrowed my choice down to Maxxis MA-P1 and Yokohama A.Drive.

Yoko's are $117 per tyre, have a 300 tread wear rating,
less siping, potentially more robustly-shaped tread blocks, albeit a softer tyre compound.

Maxxis are $95 per tyre, has a 440 tread wear rating
more siping, curves and sharper narrower edges in tread blocks, firmer compound.
probably better wet traction, slightly noisier, slightly less dry grip traction.

I wonder if a harder compound would be noticeably better for abrasion resistance in HOT conditions; scorching sand or rock.

I have weared down maybe 4 full sets of Yokohama A.drive (185/65R14) on my Impreza over 7 years. They lasted maybe less than 30k km, but I was suitably impressed with their grip on road. Probably, they'd wear off quickly when driven on gravel.

I believe that a tyre with a harder compound will be more wear-resistant on gravel, hot or cold weather notwithstanding.

I've already driven 13,000 km since July...
I'd love to see more of Oz, and drive in hot weather. (my favourite )

Someone in there said their Maxxis MAP1's fractured after 10k when they hit a curb!
Not the kind of review I'd like to hear, if I want to abuse a passenger tyre offroad.

Same website, I also checked out the Yoko A drives and another bloke form South Australia reckoned he got 50,000 km from them, commuting 125km a day for work. So the wear on the A.Drives are sounding better.

If I go with A.Drives, I'll need to stay with 185/70R-14 because the next biggest diameter size is 205/60-something. That's all right though as 185/70R-14's are not a bad tyre, handling is superb with this tyre size , though I was hoping for a bit more ground clearance.

I bought the Yoko's. $478 included balancing, and tyre disposal fee. So far so good. Feels like I'm riding on marshmellows now.

My car still sits a bit higher than before, because the tread has a lot more meat on them.

I hadn't thought of haggling. forgot?
I checked out the price at various shops and this one was the cheapest of the lot already.
