For work in independent schools go to their website, go to teachers.on.net, try the websites of the major news papers in the states you want to work. If I were you. I will try teaching at teen schools or troubled teen schools.

YAY

the school I was posted at had a large contingent of "wasters" and i mean large, who ever was their "supplier" must be rather rich.

my younger brother had a similar experience at the school he was posted at knife fights at lunch and large gang populations

not teaching long term in a secondary school ever again

So let me get this right ... you are telling a teacher who ended up on stress leave because of teen age students... to go and teach in an all teen school or teens with trouble

While I have 12 years teaching experience, and have taught students from the age of 18 months up to 50 years of age, Im not about to put my head into the cranky old lions head and let it be gnawed off slowly.

As a "good" student, some of the things that happen at school (im at a reputable Private school) are quite scary! especially the kids and what they are willing to do!

Police investigate Facebook threats

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/-/na ... k-threats/

Police have taken over an investigation into defamatory and threatening comments made on Facebook about staff at an Albany high school.

More than 200 hundred students are part of the North Albany Senior High School Facebook group which named teachers and made violent threats.

The Education Department first announced it would conduct an investigation but has since handed the task over to police. Albany Detectives say they will try to determine whether any criminal charges can be laid.

TOONGA
I know this is an old thread, but there's something that I have to clarify.
First off, I wrote the comments in regards to the supposed "Chainsaw massacres".

The comment I wrote was on a facebook page named "North Albany Senior High School" The post I put up was along the lines of "I'm suprised no one on here has made a group saying "If this group gets x amount of members all NASHS teachers should be massacred by chainsaws"". Followed by something like "Nah, just joking." -most of which was cropped and edited out of the headlined quotes.

The rest of the headlines were from defamatory comments on that page. People writing situations of sexual harrassment from nashs teachers when they attended the school.

As far as I'm concerned, the media played this story for controversy. I wasn't formally charged for my comments, but instead received a 'juvenile caution'. Both senior detectives that interviewed me both said if they had full influence on the punishment to be dealt for my comments I wouldn't have even been issued a formal caution. It was only because the Schooling minister demanded some form of punishment was dealt to the person that published the comments. Which was me. No one else was warned or charged for the derogatory or defamatory comments in regards to sexual harrassment + other threats that were published on the site.

So to anyone out there stressing about violent students if you're wanting to be a teacher, don't stress. It's generally the situation getting exaggerated 90% of the time.

G'day Leigh and welcome to the forum!

I must say WOW! Did you track this thread down to share your side of the story or did you stuble across it and decide to share? I'm not critising, I think it's a great thing. I guess it also shows the power of words on the internet that seem like a bit of a laugh or a good time at that given moment - until it gets taken out of context.

I'm also keen to know if you're a subaru fan! That would complete the circle so to speak.

To add a new dimention to this thread from the recent CRT (casual relief teaching) I've had, the use of electronic devices in the classroom I've found really difficult to control. Laptops, mobile phones, Ipods - when 90% of the class see it as ok to use these devices in the classroom regardless of what you say and when the school seems to lack a policy about such devices I find it very difficult to keep the momentum of the content moving the way I want it to. I'd like to make use of a hammer in these classes or feel that I am no more than a baby sitter en-masse!

I think it would be different if I was full time at the school, I hope it's just the usual crap you endure as a CRT - but I'd like to break that mould.

Cheers

Agreed and i'm 16! (A Good, Bright Student)
Bennie, trust me even in a private school with full time teachers it's bad.
Ipods are controlable (as you can see them) but kids are always wanting to use them, and ocasionally allowed to.
Phones are not allowed either but they are so easy to use without the teacher seing (in pocket or pencil case)
Then there are laptops, 11's and 12's are given them at my school to borrow for the year, and use them in most classes. So that is ok.
Or if you in a lower year level, and have a laptop like me, teachers can't really do anything, most of the time i'm doing my work, but often also here on the forum. (so easy to do what you like without the teacher seeing)
And then there are just complete idiots who act like they are in a public school, with parents who have the money to send them to a private school.
So really there is no escape, we get it as bad as the public schools.

Reminds me of when I was teaching English in China a couple of years ago, kids were 15 & 16 and more interested in doing homework, sleeping or texting, poor little sods started at 7.30 in the morning and finished at 9pm and then expected to do 3-4hrs of homework so you couldn't blame them and all classes were only 40min ( they did have 2 long lunch & dinner breaks )I'd confiscate at least one mobile every class and give it back at the end of class whereas the Chinese teachers would keep them for a week...........Anyhow one day I caught this girl texting under the desk ( they don't realise the light from the phone reflects back on their clothes lol ) so I took it off her and walked back to the podium where we had to stand and put the phone down and noticed it looked like the duster so I grabbed the duster instantly and threw it at the window above the door making a hell of a racket, the poor kid burst into tears thinking I'd destroyed it so feeling bad after about a minute I held up her phone to show her it was ok and got a standing ovation from the rest of the class for pulling a really cool trick haha, but generally they were great kids even though the classes had 80 - 95 kids on average but I'd rather that than a class of 23 Australian shit's

Yeah, there are nice kids here, but as soon as you introduce alcohol, drugs, bad upbringing, etc, then your in for trouble.
Yeah poor kids, but they have a better future than an Aussie dickhead.

Ah, I'm glad I'm not at school anymore

The last I saw of any dickheads was at tafe this time last year, the ones who got drunk nearly every night, turned up late, argued with every lecturer, were bad at the job and constantly talked about how they hated tafe and the lecturer is a F*wit....Never occurred to them that THEY paid for it and it was their choice to be there or not. Also never seemed to enter their minds that maybe they might need these skills to get a job one day, they'd rather hoon in their commonwhores and get into fights in the city. Oops that turned into a bit of a rant :o Don't see anyone like that now, everyone at work is more mature.

I have to fire up about this this one, I've generally ignored this thread but nup not today.

Kids are kids - teenages are teenagers, especially! Somehow society has decided that kids are supposed to be the same as they were in my or my parents generation, when the world is completely different. The VAST majority of kids these days are what we call 'digital natives' - they've never had life without internet, a lot of them have been born since the first generation of iPod. Think about the early mobile phones that were released less than 20 years ago - shit I was using a nokia 3310 in 2004 and that was the ducks nuts - someone had a colour screen and I remember being 'wowed'.

Social media is just that - SOCIAL. What have teenages lives always revolved around? Being SOCIAL! Technology in the last 5 years has become more compact, more sophisticated and this HAS changed they relationships kids have with each other.

Students aren't the problem - schools and teachers are!

I have never had a problem with students on the wrong websites, misusing phones or listening to iPods at the wrong time. Why? Because I don't sit my student in rows, don't stand at the front of the class, don't control their learning with iron 'disipline'. Students don't act up because the youth of today are somehow 'corrupt' or 'undisiplined' - they act up and do the wrong thing because they're disengaged - and a good teacher should look at their own behaviour and practice before they start labling or blaming students.

I've been to many schools over the last few years and there is a lot of great stuff going on - especially in public schools! There seems to be a very broad brush being swung around throughout this thread by people who have been shafted by the system. It's the same in every professional and I hope they are putting themselves to good productive and happy projects since they've moved out of education. It's everyone's favourite (especially the media) passtime to play up the sensational and terrible - but how about we focus on the great kids, the break through moments and rewarding experiences that make teaching and schools special - perhaps one day people will quit bagging out a system that is full of passionate and enthusiastic professionals.

A subsitute teacher always cops the worst of it - it's been the way since subs have been around! I know my kids in the past are great for me and the first time they gave a sub for me grief, word made its way back to me and it didn't happen again. Teenagers will always push the boundaries, and being a sub it's pretty much impossible to keep their existing boundaries in place unless it's a pretty exceptional school. As for misbehaviour for subs... schools have bigger fish to fry than kids looking at a phone during a sub's lesson.

BTW, there's dickheads in China too.

Rant over.
