Easiest way to remove awd vortex gearbox?

Post by B00sting » Thu Apr 05, 2012 6:46 pm

Hi guys,

Well trying to get rid of the vortex but no bites, so going to get my mate to pull the box out for me (because I have no bloody time with work).

Before he does it, anyone know any tips for this particular car? I did a search but only found tips for other model cars.

It's an 89 model subaru vortex awd turbo 5 speed manual.

Would prefer to do it without pulling engine out, but if this is quicker would probably do it that way.

Any tips posted here will be given to my mate so thankyou!

just unbolt everything and it should just drop. you will need to get the exhaust out of the way, the gear leakages, The diff lock vac stuff, the engine stay rod and all elec wires undone or unplugged.

If you don't have a car hoist its annoying but put the car on stands as high as you can, place a trolley jack under the box and undo all the cross-members and the 4 bolts than hold the engine to the gearbox. then lower the jack and fight a bit with it till you get it off the engine and down.

Only problem is if your car isn't high enough you won't be able to get the box out from under the car:)

Hope it helps:)

P.s sent a pm about the parts, did you get it?

My sole experience with removing a gearbox involved pretty much what Guy said, plus lots of beer and swearing.

@ Purp LOL.
maybe put the front up on ramps after undoing the 4 engine/gbox bolts and just start unbolting stuff that gets in the way.

The biggie is removing the turbos downpipe at least in an L Series . Also the vac can needs to be unbolted from the gearbox in an L to get it far back enough to get the first motion shaft out of the crank spigot bearing and clutch splines .
First things first though , starter/tailshaft/DOJs/speedo cable/pitch stopper/shift linkage and steady bars .

These boxes are so flamin' HEAVY I won't risk my pooper valve, foofer valve either underneath so for me is only engine out then box, just need to clean and study linkages for split pins, undo bolts at back of box that hold linkages, they can stay attached to body until box is out that way.

Well I helped finish it on the weekend.
From what I saw (about half the removal process), the most annoying bit was the turbo down pipe. what a POS. aside from tight bolts as per usual it wasn't too bad.

we had it on four stands and brought it down on the trolley jack and it wheeled straight out, no lifting of car required!
