I tried getting the cover off.
It is more than 4 bolts holding it in and one of them is right in front of one of my electric fans.
I cannot put my socket wrench over it and I don't own any ring spanners.

It still looks like there's more cover behind the accessories.

Battery is removed.
I found out it is rated at 320 CCA.
The brand "Power 2000." (SuperCheap?)
I was thinking about upgrading it anyway so might as well now.

I think I might have lost the receipt for the new coil that I don't need.
Had it the same day I bought it but the store closed 11 minutes before I could get there to return it.
Maybe I'll put it back in.

I'm thinking about keeping my EA82 in my car until sometime in June,
since I don't want to spend too much time mucking about with my car before then.

I want to own more tools, but I don't have simple things like ring spanners yet mostly because when I lived in Bunbury, WA I didn't have any room. No garage, not even a shed. Just a tiny room and my L Series. Now I have a garage...

I have a great set of screwdrivers and a decent 3/8-1/4" drive socket set.
What else should I buy to do a EJ conversion? Sizes?
I think I might be able to borrow special tools,
but ring spanners I'd probably use a lot.

The other guys will be more specific but when choosing ring spanners definately buy a set of metric RATCHET ring spanners 8mm to 20mm with open end the other end. Bought a set from Supercheap for about $20 and use them all the time- simply essential.

yeh, if you are doing it yourself and you haven't done anything like that it will take you months. i was a little bit more experienced than you when i started, by the sound of it, and i ended up taking a good 2 months from starting on stripping the lib to turning the key on the L with the new motor. (That said, i did do all the wiring myself).

if you do that, dont try and break super tight bolts with them. still use a normal spanner to crack them and then sub in the ratchet. $20 ratchet sets wont last long under big loads...

and for sizes, i have used 10, 12, 13 (rare), 14, (possibly a 15 or 16 once or twice), 17, 19 and 22 off the top of my head. a range from 10 to 22 would be suitable really. (you should have a good idea from what you have used with your sockets anyway).

I wouldn't say improved but...

My gearbox finally let go mid way through a set of lights. I was luckily on a hill and managed to roll the car down and pull off the side away from the traffic. Made the loudest bang and I thought it was first gear but all gears are gone. Its making wierd noises even when in nuetral without clutch in, stops when you put the clutch in..

Managed to limp the car home in 3rd low(which was the only one that slotted in) with no other gears. Was only 1.5km away from home so I could of walked if I was unable to limp it home.

still confused...

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Tue Apr 17, 2012 7:16 pm

I finally got the driverside cover off that only came off with 4 bolts. To get the fourth bolt I actually had to saw it off. The rest came off very easily, hand spinning most of the way. Perhaps someone damaged the 4th bolt or thread, so put some other spacer in there... only it was just spinning in the thread, not backing out.

I also removed:

-the both electrical fans to gain access

-the airbox so I could gain access to the accessories if needed

-nearly every plastic-cover screw on the front of the engine
(I now have a leak on the passenger side, brownish-red... tranny fluid?)

-the front belt... my air conditioning wasn't getting enough tension
plus my rear belt probably needs changing...
but mostly again to gain needed access to the front of the engine?

After removing the cover on the driverside, the belt seems intact;
tight on the bottom and not too slack on the top.

I am still dumbstruck as to why my engine turned itself off. :???:

What else should I remove?

Didn't improve my Subie but it's a step in the right direction; got my twin carb engine to Rising Sun for rebuild :) Also got talking to Steve about restoration and turns out there's a decent parts car available with alot of goodies on it. My idea of getting the new engine in to test out in the car as it is before rego expires in 3 months is shot to pieces though  Seems that engine would probably blow up my old gearbox, L series 5 speed is a must.
Will it ever end!?

I think that brownish-red fluid is from me unknowingly performing a power-steering-flush. :p

I wanted to do that sometime anyway,
I just hope I can get it back together without leaking again.
I doubt that cutting off that stubborn bolt punctured my power steering fluid line,
I inspected the line for nicks just now, but perhaps it is punctured?
I'm hoping this is just from loosening the resevior.

I also removed my battery and cracked battery tray.
Might as well swap in a new battery before it's back on the road.

That's crazy mate! I didn't think it was possible to break one of these gearboxes with a NA EJ20!! What were you doing wrong??

The Passenger's side cover. This is the belt that's broken! There are two cam belts on the EA82. It's the passenger's side that's dead.

Nah, this is just what happens with age...

Did you not tighten it up after that long thread about your AC?

Please start your own thread - or continue the one in 'Engine, gearbox and diff' Given your previous threads we are at least 4+ pages, this topic would be better placed there, rather in 'what did you do...today' thread.

Lots of win here

1. Twin carb rebuild

2. Rising Sun (north!)

3. L-Series 5spd mated to a EA81 Twin carb

Well done - looking fwd to the end product. You will be a very happy chappy.

A Q though, is the car in the pics your parents car? An original 1980's SA 4WD club car?

Sound good Silverbullet. pics would be great.

Today, fitted some low wattage driving lights, oil change to synthetic blend 15W-50 and relocated expansion bottle to other side of engine so its in the "suck" heater libne...meaning when refilling coolant fluid can easily go straight to the water pump and all but eliminate air pockets.

And now that the radiator is up front there is heaps of room over the transaxle and engine....for a ...dare I say it? SC14??? In fact with no carbie there is room for a triple scuba LPG tank  (might tell the Mrs if we get LPG with a rebate is would finance the supercharger which will get her to the hairdressers on time every time...:)

Didn't even notice that wire until you pointed it out Tweety :o I like that array of lights, would look good all it up. No pics of my progress yet, it's all in the future.

Well, it's my car now but yes an original 81' that was in the SA Subaru 4WD club for a few years. Parents bought it new but it's been mum's car, dad's car, brother's car and now mine...can I still say one owner since new? :D When my brother got his new Rexy and ditched the wagon it was this close to being scrapped and cubed...he still can't understand why I'm bothering.
