Does my L Series have 3.90:1 final drive?

Post by 2nd Hand Yank » Thu Apr 26, 2012 6:15 am

According to my 1993 generic Subaru manual (not looking at the Australian Supplement...where did I put it?) every car has the 3.90 final drive, except all MFPI cars and ones with 3AT(3spd auto?) while the 5sp D/R (dual range) is supposed to have the 3.90:1

the sitcker on the rear diff (normally covered in oil, mud and dust) should say 3.90:1 otherwise it will say 3.70:1 which is rather unlikely

A lot of L's had 3.7:1 which is partly why it is so easy to jam a 5 speeder in the MY's . Have only struck one 3.9:1 diff so far.... search in here and you mind folk feel th ratio selection was very random :)

Having crawled under Matt's L series a few times my memory tells me it is 3.90.1 but that could've been the red L at the wreckers in Bunbury as well, I know one of them is a 3.90.1 :)

TOONGA
thanks.

I'll go have a look.

Why did I start this thread?
Well I'm just kinda day-dreaming about deeper gearing.
If I already have 3.90:1, then I can't do much better even going to 4.1:1... or can I.
Trying to figure out if there's much room for improvement.

But if there isn't, I'm content with 3.90:1 final drive with a dual range 4Lo at 1.59:1. (one of Subaru's best gear combos?)

"Matt" was telling me he has 3.70 but wishes he had 3.90's in his older generation L-Series. (or is it the model before the L Series?)

4.11 and 1.59 low range is the best combination you can get.

My L with it's 3.70 diffs and 13" wheels goes like the clappers for a 1.8l engine.

As already said just drop an EJ engine in rather than changing your gearing to try and compensate for the lack of power. Its cheaper than doing the gearing too probs.

Im actually starting to get sad about selling the L-Series in a week or 2!

4.44 can you not for best offroad?

For a mix of on and offroad 3.9/ 1.59 low is the best you can get.

Of course there is 4.44 and 1.59 but for semi decent and good offroad performance you want 4.11.
If you have 3.90 and 1.59 you really want lots of torque to back it up while a 4 cylinder with the 4.11 is enough.

Going just slightly offtopic
