L series water pump sealant

Post by Cliff R » Thu May 03, 2012 6:11 pm

Wondering what everyone's experiences have been re using a sealant when fitting a water pump to an L series on either side of the gasket.
I thought of using the good old Hylomar (spelling) but if anyone has a better idea please let me know.

I use greymax or whatever by loctite, a finer grade silcone, same for engine block halves and gearbox halves etc. An engineer I know grumps about gaskets were made to seal without using any other sealants, and when you think about all the genuine gaskets you've scraped off - there was no additional sealant eh ?

It's been ages since I've done one! I don't think I use the sealant, but I always make sure that the sealing surfaces are as clean as they can possibly be. That' half the battle, if you've got this right you should be sweet with a new gasket ;)

Hylomar (and yes the spelling was correct ;) ) is the best for any type of gasket. Personally I use a smear of grease on each side of the paper type gaskets. On all other types of gaskets I use Hylomar spray, it's not cheap but it's the best.
