As Jono has pointed out, if the engine has alloy heads, it will be fine. The valve saver is only needed on engines with cast iron heads because they dont have separate valve seats, they are simply machined into the head

So this is something that we should look out for if buying old heads, or if we have painted our rockers etc.

Not for the subaru! I've not heard of cast iron heads for the subaru. So as we've said like Gannon has above, the EA81, black or blue rocker covers will be fine for use with unleaded and NO valve saver additive.Brumby Kid wrote:So this is something that we should look out for if buying old heads, or if we have painted our rockers etc.

I didnt mean Subaru's had iron heads, I was referring to other engines like Holden 186, 202 etc.El_Freddo wrote: I've not heard of cast iron heads for the subaru.

Yeah I know this Gannon - maybe I should have been more specific. I quoted Brumby Kid as I thought this is what he was alluding to...Gannon wrote:I didnt mean Subaru's had iron heads, I was referring to other engines like Holden 186, 202 etc.
Several of us have basically said the same thing in different ways now yet some members are still asking about it. Read the thread people!

Just clarifying as I know swapping heads is common for these engines.
Thank you mr fuji.
We need to make this and many other threads a one post sticky. Where after discussing we have clearly answered the problem and no more discussing needed, all the important stuff can go into one simple post.

pretty much as correct as you can getsteptoe wrote:You'll read somewhere comment from an engineer society or the like, that all alloy heads use the hardened stellite valve seats that ULP and LPG requires for good valve life - so any engine with alloy head should be suitable to run ULP without any additive
