Yet another new guy

Post by AshR » Fri May 11, 2012 2:25 pm

Hey all, I'm Ash

been around the forum a few times just looking for info but never got around to registering.

I went to Uni with El_Frodo (Same uni different course)

I've had a 1997 RX Liberty Wagon for 5 or 6 years now, is an awesome car. (Though now needs a PS pump, have to hunt one down)

Been a fan of Subarus since owning that one, even convinced my bro to buy an 05 Liberty H6 (only a little jealous)

but now am looking around for a Brumby to play with, mainly as a ute to take my dirtbike places or tripping around the countryside so my wife isn't left without a car if I head out (only one car family atm and road bike for me ;) )

No doubt I'll be lurking around a fair amount getting more brumby info and will certainly post a build thread if I get one that needs a bit of work to get on the road.

Not too many of "those" stories from uni actually, besides the many drunken nights out etc :)

But the hunt for the Brumby is on, been reading Brumbyrunner's thread... that's probably a tad extreme for what I'm after, but defiantly plan on a lift kit then a bar in the back to tie moto's to (and tie-down points in the tray)

g'day and welcome! i use my brumby for my motorbikes also the main reason why i brought it.
the brumbys have tie down point on the side wall of the tub and they are very strong holds my 120kg bike no problems. the only issue with the brumby is that its a very tight fit for two bikes, there will be rubbing if you use two and would require me tie down points. i jus :(t use it to carry the one and no matte what angle i put it on cant get the tailgate to close
also with the plained lift also remember its that little bit taller to get yous bike on and off! mine standard hieght i can do it bymelf but wouldnt want it much bigger

Thanks for the info Thunder. I only have the one bike to transport. Mate has a ute and a 3 bike trailer as well so if more people are coming they can go with him :p

But in the time since posting my hello, I may have found a project Brumby already lifted but some mechanical issues (mostly straight body which counts) AND it's a targa top.

Now I just have to sort funds out and get it transported here. so fingers crossed I can pull this off and can post a pic of my impending project.

As for the tiedown points, I have only recently seen a pic side on of the tray and saw the points all the way down :) good times, if I was taking another bike on a regular basis I'd run some tiedowns down the middle of the tray.

I don't mind having the tail down when transporting the bike, just need to tie everything down before driving off I guess. Do the tailgates have support to hold them flat when open http://dgmtailgatesupport.com/ (first example of a commercial support and there are some "interesting pics nsfw" there too :p)

I don't imagine the hinge itself would like having the bikes rear weight on it for extended periods.

Have read through Brumbyrunner's thread, too bad about the rule change that essentially put the little ute out of contention :(

Loving the forum the more I read. Once I get a brumby I'll start a (re)build thread.
(Sorry for the novel)

You may not be once I get one, I'll be on the phone/ FB/ Forum (any other way I can get you) with questions :p

after reading so much of the forum threads here over the weekend there isn't too much that's "scary" about the brumby. They seem like a pretty basic car to work one.

So far my mechanical experience is changing the pads on my Liberty and soon the PS Pump and have pulled the gearbox from a liteace van.

yea the tray flap will stay flat. i wouldnt imagine it would like a bikes wieght on it for long periods of time, but in saying that when you tie it down the rear end of the bike is fairly light. i put mine on a angle and tie up the tailgate as far as i can, mainly so i dont loose my gear.

were did you score the targa top from? i am so very jelous;)

Don't really want to put out details yet till I'm in possession, but it's not from Melbourne so bit of juggling to get it to my house :)

But as soon as I have the keys I'll post up pics, (have to sell a liteace van to help fund then it's on)

Hey thunder, just looking around for options for "keeping things in" when the tailgate is down and found this.

http://www.moto-gate.com/

Might be worth checking out, or I can see if I can whip something up cheaper (but $60 looks like a great option)

yea ive seen thoes and have heard good things. i have never had a problem with loosing stuff and due to the tall tub side not much wind gets in the tub thus preventing stufff flying out which is great.
also note the brumby goes very well with the bike in the back and full of stuff

Man I can't wait, this is all coming together really quickly (to actually go from wanting a Brumby to possibly having it parked in my garage)

Might have funds in the next week or so then have to wait on transport :)

have read through Bennie's "Sonny the Brumby" thread too, L dash and elec windows + central are on the list of "things to do after RWC and Reg" now

Possibly the only thing I'll have to really modify before RWC is take the lift kit out and put it on standard wheels, but if that's the worst I should be apples :)

That dashboard is from the coupe or the touring wagon minus the digi dash. The digi dash and 6 gauge analogue dash are interchangeable if you've got the wiring from behind the dash board to go with it. I'll let you know what you need to do the conversion anyway ;)

Personally I'd try and pass the lift kit through RWC with stock tyres on it. A 2 inch kit should still be legal without an engineer's certificate.

Cheers

i appreciate people who modify the interior of the brumby but personally the only thing i would do would be to change the seats with that of a forester of something with more support

Yeah seats will have to go for RWC by the looks (from the pics a couple of tares around the drivers corner)

Will need new carpet too from the looks but have sourced that cheap on ebay.

And as for the RWC I wont be taking the lift kit out unless I'm told to. I'll grab the wheels from you Bennie when I plan on taking it to the mechanic (not any time soon) and go from what he says :)
