cracked windscreen dangerous?

hi guys.

a about a month a go i had a rock hit my windscreen in my forester, in some road works. because some inconsiderate driver was not doing the 40kmh

any way i did have it patched up but the guy said due to having moisture in the crack it didnt work very well (he didnt charge me for this).
so now we are getting into winter and some frosty mournings already in Ballarat my chip has already turned into a nasty crack.

so my question is, other then visiblilty issues, is a cracked windscreen dangerous? the crack cannot be felt on the inside just the outside.

not in my very limited opinion UNLESS that crack is on the drivers side half, more than 50?mm long or 75mm long if it reaches an edge. RTA inspection fail but not that dangeroos that it has to be marked 'not to be driven'

I think the danger comes from its ability to refract light from crack into your eyes, blinding you temporarily while in control of the motor vehicle. Ask a windscreen guy to look at it and comment.

Just how big is your crack ?

the crack would be about a 2cm long, but its on the passenger side, doesnt effect my visibility at all

Not considered a reason to fail a NSW pink or blue slip inspection then. Think they drill a hole at each end of the crack to stop travel, then fill with goo ????

havnt heard this method to stop a crack. lucky here in vic the car doesnt havent to pass rego every year

Not drilling a hole in glass sounds good but so does not going through rego every year.
In NSW if the crack is not too big and is not on the drivers side all is OK.
Only thought is if the integrity of the car is dependant on the structure of the windscreen there may be an issue but with a small crack I cant see a problem.
Maybe a trip to the rego station and a quick question to the rego person ?

New South inspectin is not even meant to consider the LHS half of the screen, RHS allows above and no more than a count of three. Likely a national inspection standard.

With frosts you can watch that crack grow.

I wouldn't be concerned about it until it's in your field of vision or a police officer pulls you over. I've managed to get a way without chips in my screen so far, but I've got the sandblasted effect big time. Dad's rangie has always had chips and cracks in the windscreen...
