I asked the guy from King...
"Wow those spring rates seem much higher than the 160lb/in and 197lb/in stated in the factory service manual for sedan and wagon. Do you know if this makes the car sit higher, or are your springs slightly shorter to allow for the higher rate?"
His reply was
"Yes, the springs are slightly shorter in free height to compensate for the extra spring rate"

So I measured from top of top hat to bottom of bottom perch which appears to be 260mm, so say 255mm spring length.Gannon wrote: 260mm compressed with empty fuel tank and boot
If the King replacements have a free length of 280mm, that means that they only have to compress 25mm to achieve the same height I have now.
So if the Kings fit in the strut between the top and bottom perches without being loose, does this mean my wagon springs only compress 25mm with the weight of the car on them? Surely not?
Or am I thinking of this arse about?
Or are the wagon springs much more compressed when encapsulated in the strut?
I really need to measure the free length of a wagon coil

dont know if this will help you.
I just measured the free length of a stock shagged wagon spring, and is 310mm.
the king spring are definitely shorter for the wagons in free length, I cant measure these for you, as they are in my car. I do know that i can put king springs in without a spring press on the rear, but required a press to put standard springs in, even though the standard ones are much 'softer'.
In the car, however, the kings sit slightly higher (i would guess 15mm, but haven't measured). in my opinion they give a much better ride, but that doesn't help you if you are trying to get lower.
cant comment on sedan springs, but that is what i know of the wagon springs.

Thanks mate that is a huge help. 310mm free length so that means that they are 55mm compressed when in my car.
Can you do me a favour and measure the compressed length of your new Kings like I have in the above photo? A photo like above would be a bonus also.

on a slight slope.
225mm short side, 235mm high side.
that is quite an awkward spot to take a photo from at night on wet ground

Edit: I should also mention the front is on slightly higher ground, so i think that will be slightly more compressed than actual.

Awesome photo, thankyou.
Quite a bit shorter than I was expecting, I wonder what the weight difference is between the rear of a sedan and a wagon?
So were you holding the start of the tape on the top of the top spring seat, or just below it?

Ah see I measured differently. But it appears that there is about 10mm in each end, so that makes yours about 250mm, which makes it pretty similar to mine.

Not sure if I have said this before - with the rears in my Vortex I measured as being 130mm from bolt centre to the underside of the spring seat , with the car seated on flat flor, the compressed state of the std RX rear coil , yellow daub , measured from the top side of the top cup, but at its lowest point - the dip ,down to the underside of the spring seat is just under 200mm , call it 197mm
Looking back a few pages you have much the same strut 125 ~130 , yet with my spring I have about 50 or 60mm less compressed height of the spring and seats, with the weight of the Vorts bum, 1/4 tank of 98.
Yes, now you need to decide if the Kings rear coils are gonna be as good a height drop .......
Hope this sheds some more light

I hope Nev doesnt mind, but this is a photo he sent me of an 11mm thick sedan King coil in its compressed state in his Vortex. Looks to be around the 200mm mark, but with a much higher spring rate than the standard RX spring, 245lb vs 180lb.
Maybe sedan King replacements will do the job

Nev has thrown me 2 springs that were of no use to him, so I have measured them to compare
Pink and orange daub, wagon spring 310mm long and 10.8mm wire
Yellow and orange daub, im guessing sedan spring 285mm long with 10mm wire

Does anyone know what colour paint daubs are on front RX springs?

Neville, wind things back one step ...checked ya catalogue to see if there is a part number for left, another for right ? Coz we found that with the Vorts.
Different part numbers were different colour daubs too !
I'll check my psuedo RX as I believe it has RX suspension in it - they guy I bought it off mumbled something about $600 suspension in it, when I paid him that for the car. Didn't tell him the rear brakes were worth that much alone
The rear coils are true RX

OK
the lowest coil of the RHS has a ...bloody near forgot ...white daub, next coil up is a blue, lighter than mid blue.
LHS has a yellow blob on bottom coil to match rear RX coils, and then a blue on next coil up
Hope they are not colours found on 4WD wagons...think blue /white combo was off a FWD Royale sedan, coz that is what's in my Vortex and that is what they are out of, so not true RX fronts ?

Anyone else happen to have an RX with factory coils under it?
